I'm not sure if y'all saw a CNN report on how the US had almost started WW3 with China based on fabricated information generated by a chatbot, claiming that a Chinese vessel was carrying components of nuclear weapons. That was an "existential threat" to humanity www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I think administrators cowing to media pressure hurts the reputation of a university much more than piloting a long overdue and quite modest change to grading practices.

I just started teaching a second calculus course where I get to choose whatever topics from single and multivariable calculus I think makes sense, and a grab bag of integration techniques feels like the least interesting thing I could choose.

Imagine replacing people with tokens for plagiarism slot machines. This is why I take the extreme position that LLM-fuelled papers are not research, should not be read or cited, and should definitely count in one’s CV, but negatively.

THIS. AI isn't "going rogue" any more than those exploding Samsung galaxy phones from 2016 went rogue. Human engineers poorly deployed a technology and there were negative consequences. The responsibility falls entirely on humans.

For physics instructors, the takeaway is important: if our grading practices heavily penalize blank responses, exams may disadvantage some student groups and may not measure physics understanding equally well across students.

Abstract
We provide a clearer presentation of the Chair44 monotile, a new strongly aperiodic
monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space E3
.
With LLM tools (ChatGPT Astra), Ioannis Tsiokos recently reported the first
known strongly aperiodic monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space E
3
, the Chair44
monotile (see Figure 3, taken from Tsiokos’ preprint [11]). Hats off to Tsiokos for this
discovery, the framework he developed, and the human inquiry that led to the Chair44
monotile.
However, the paper itself and the formalization that it claims for support are not
in a form that is readily usable to anyone who wants to understand or check it. This is
not just because of the needless length or complexity of the argument (which is indeed
overwhelming as presented), or because the formal repository is not in normal form, or
because much of the text is misleading or poorly organized, but mainly because there
is so much irrelevant puff to push through. These are hallmarks of an LLM-driven
research paper.
We must, absolutely, insist on a higher standard for scientific discourse. The aim
must be to communicate, clearly, with people in the community — certainly this is an
historical requirement for publication.1

I agree. It wasn't too bad when we arrived at 8:30, especially once we got off the paved trail and climbed out of the little canyon. But it was unpleasantly crowded when we looped back to the parking lot.

Not writing your own blog posts sadly seems to be one of MAA's "values" these days

Drew Lewis @drew-lewis.com · 15/09/2026
These companies willfully disregarding license terms are unequivocally an attack on open science and open education. We need more scientists and mathematicians to speak out on how these attacks diminish our fields and curtail progress
060
Drew Lewis @drew-lewis.com · 15/09/2026
That said, copyright claims and license violations are up to courts, and these have not yet been adjudicated. Which is precisely why these companies are pushing for legislation to indemnify them from their copyright/license violations.

Drew Lewis @drew-lewis.com · 15/09/2026
My take is that OpenAI, Anthropic et al. are in violation of the NC (non-commercial) variant licenses. I personally always opt for SA (share alike) licenses (a.k.a. copy left), which the AI companies also violate by not resharing their derivative works under the same license.

Contrast it with the open letter about the Caltech nonsense, which had a ton of Ph.D. students sign it as well as at least one Fields medalist, but his name was just listed amongst all the other signers

Drew Lewis @drew-lewis.com · 13/09/2026
I don't feel like leaning into elitism in the math community is a good move at any time. Especially so with something like the Fields medal, whose winners are notoriously non diverse and unrepresentative of mathematics as a whole

So not only was Navier-Stokes likely plagiarized, the Jacobian conjecture counterexample was likely plagiarized as well. arxiv.org/html/2609.05...
Supplemental AI statement of the third author. Very unfortunately and without me being aware, the in-progress version of this work dated January 14, 2025 was shared publicly at the link https://www.ihes.fr/~gabber/BGV160.pdf on January 16, 2025. My understanding is that after 18 months it became a feed of the AI models. On July 23, a graduate student sent me the 37 pages pdf file at the link https://people.math.binghamton.edu/adrian/AI.pdf produced by AI when prompted on how the 7 pages AI paper https://www.ulam.ai/research/jacobian.pdf relates to BGV160.pdf; a typo in the statement of Theorem 30.1(2.j) was fixed based on what the file mentioned (its application to Theorem 30.1(10.c) did not require any change).

Not impressed by colleagues who used blatantly unethical AI, helped it develop, got research funds from it, made advertisement for it, and now are clutching their pearls "oh no this isn't what maths is about" while carefully not apologizing nor promising to behave differently in the future.
