In a very basic attempt to understand this I fit a log model with monthly variations to the number of arXiv postings from 2010-2019. Below I have graphed the % deviation from the resulting prediction since 2020 as well as the (rough) launch date of a random sampling of AI models. Some thoughts: 1/n
A hack-y graph showing the percentage of arXiv postings above the predicted trend as well as the launch date of various AI models.

I am having this vision where in the future math research might be like (very simplified) mental model of physics/science research. For the lack of better terms there will be “experimental” and “theoretical” mathematicians; each doing math but in ways that are entirely foreign to us now. 1/n

Does anyone know exactly which “AI model at Anthropic” Aplöge was using on his work on the Navier-Stokes? Was it public? Running on Anthropic hardware? Who was paying the compute? How does this differ from his job as an Anthropic employee?
“ But now A.I. has upended everything. In their collaboration, Dr. Buckmaster set up the problem, and then Dr. Alpöge fed that into an A.I. model at Anthropic. Based on what came out, they provided further input and repeated the steps.” ~NYT

Setting aside my feelings about AI, there is something I find deeply distasteful about the conversations about AI taking or stealing results that individual people were “on a path towards” or close to. I am not sure I have the right language to express it, but here it goes… (1/n)

I do not wade into discussions often, but I find the math community rallying around Alpöge, Buckmaster, and Coiculesco troubling. Like it or not by collaborating with Alpöge and using LLMs I think you are stepping outside of academic mathematics and into a PR war between Anthropic and openAI. (1/8)

Tropicalizations of locally symmetric varieties
This paper provides a rigorous study of tropicalizations of locally symmetric varieties. We give applications beyond tropical geometry, to the cohomology of moduli spaces as well as to the cohomology ...

If anyone knows of any fellowships (ideally for early career researchers) to stay in the EU or Canada drop me a DM.

Was trying to find a witty way to say this but cannot find it… But when I think of my position as a junior TT faculty member in the US I waffle between feeling like things will pass and feeling like it’s time to start preparing for this to no longer be a safe career.

European Math Friends (and maybe some enemies): did you ever want a chance to hear me speak (or heckle me)? If so the next few months are a great chance I’ll be in the EU (mostly Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland) and happy to add stops to my itinerary.

What should one keep in a tenure folder and how does everyone organize it?

Morning thought: Given the difficulties of the academic job market (little options, long timeline, etc.) what should a young math person be doing to prepare potentially needing to move because of changing political climates?

Does anyone have any good non-fiction audiobook recommendations?
