I continue to absolutely detest the word “Herstory.” Let’s leave aside that history comes from the Greek ῐ̔στορῐ́ᾱ (“inquiry”); it’s just ridiculous to separate out the experience of women from the umbrella of history. I don’t want two versions or a binary. I want women implicit in all histories.

Based on my own experience, I strongly encourage women in academia to think very long and hard about changing your name if you get married. Consider the name on your degree, the name on your publications, and even the off chance that you might get divorced one day. Just think about it.

People talk about bad or mediocre academic work as some kind of general failure of our fields or vocation or the truth itself, as if there aren’t bad movies, bad cars, bad buildings, bad appliances, bad video games, etc, and yet no one dismisses the making of those things.
