i suppose i’m not surprised that it is difficult to make people care about something that is low visibility — the vast majority of people have no idea who piker is — and low salience. i think we’re also going to find, for similar reasons, that the anti-trans messaging isn’t working either.

Competitive Authoritarianism in America | Journal of Democracy
The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

You drive by it. For an idle hour you think about buying. Yes, it's dilapidated, will take a lot of work to get it right, but for an hour you dream. Then you think about how isolated it is, wonder why it's been abandoned. For reasons you can't fathom, you ponder its ghosts and let go of the dream.

It’s still striking how shamelessly Musk went in and manipulated Grok when it diverged from his very specific deranged world view and the coverage of Ai scarcely ever even acknowledges that power as a real problem.

Oh, this is easy. In a two party system, a major party candidate can win regardless of quality (or commitment to democracy). In the US system of primaries, an extremist faction of one party can choose its nominee. Ergo, the two party system enables the election of anti-democratic extremists.
