The problem with utopian communes is that they need lots of people to agree on objectives, which they never do. So they collapse very quickly. The bigger they get, the more rapidly they implode, with factions fighting each other for self-interest and biological imperatives.

I have an old Dover book "The communistic societies of the United States" published 1875 in NY. It describes Rappites, Harmonists, Shakers, Icarians, Cedar Vale Commune, etc. For 200+ years, there have been commune experiments in the USA. Thiel etc. are just the latest in a long history of Utopians.

By the way, Senator Ted Cruz was born in "Albexas"—Calgary, Alberta. His parents lived/worked there in the early 70s, and Ted's birth was covered by Canada's (then new) universal healthcare system. No bills for little "Felito" Cruz's birth. They lived across the street from the 🏥 = no parking bill!😆

Now that you mention ER, yes that's a problem in Australia. If you don't actually fall unconscious on the floor, you're lucky to be seen in 8 hours at a hospital ER here. The trick is to go to the GP first to get a letter explaining that you are about to drop dead! Or arrive by ambulance!!

Thanks. I just watched the video (including heaps of adverts!). People complain about wait times in the Australian public system. But it mystifies me because I've never once experienced that. Maybe long waits in Oz are only for optional "nice-to-have" things. Anything life-threatening is very quick.

Alan U. Kennington 🇦🇺 @drauk.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
The perplexing thing is that, e.g., Australia's system costs about half as much per capita as the US system, but the average quality is much higher. The difference is, Oz doesn't have huge parasitic companies sucking money out of the system. Single-payer reduces costs by excluding the parasites!

It just occurred to me that someone should draw up a "league table" of single-payer national health insurance schemes around the world. I'm only dimly aware of Canada's system, mostly by reading praise of it on Bluesky. With a big world list, the politics of US health care could be more fact-based.

That's been my experience in Australia also. Although I hear almost every day about long waiting times in the Australian public health system, I have never experienced any such thing. Everything is super-quick, within a few days, no matter what it is. But the Oz system is well-funded, unlike the UK.
