Most of Silicon Valley seems to believe that the large scale suffering of millions of others is both a trifle, and something they are owed so they can become trillionaires

Again, it's not about whether Pike "deserves" to suffer for what she did. It's about whether we as a state and society are okay with paying taxes so that a person can be injected with gray market substances that leave them disabled by a doctor known for botching executions. Amnesty calls it torture.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha Erm, I mean, one would wish, but since big bodies in the field stopped differentiating between critical scholars and religious fundamentalists desperate for credentials, this is what we get.

America was an empty mall. America was shoddy caulk oozing from a vinyl arc in a historic heatwave. America was a brutishly redacted Frederick Douglass speech on foam posterboard in a tractor trailer Freedom Truck. America was not even selling corndogs. www.artnews.com/art-in-ameri...

The lack of consent with AI integration is truly something. My choices are "yes" or "maybe later". Where is the option to launch the AI assistant into the sun? I'll come to AI when I need something done sloppily and feel like spending my time and expertise correcting it instead of doing it myself.

A bunch of our colleagues in the qualitative, humanistic social sciences have just been cut off from their major funding body, the NSF. This comes 2 years after the NEH, the major federal funding body for the humanities, was gutted.

My uncle wanted me to see the marker for the Christiana uprising (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christi...). The town stopped an enslaver from capturing and returning 4 people to enslavement. The enslaver was killed and the attempt foiled. 41 people were indicted for treason.
A marker with names of individuals tried for treason because they resisted the fugitive slave law.The first man tried for treason was found not guilty in 15 mins. This is the marker in honor of caster handy. This side of the stone marker lists the name of the enslaver who was killed. His son was injured.

Parents who send their kids to trade school on the advice of people paid by the wealthy are helping to thin the competition for the children of the wealthy. If college is such a waste of time and money, why do the rich still send *their* kids? College teaches you to always consider the source.

1 in 8 cancers is caused by viruses. Covid and flu are both viruses that caused pandemics and mutate enough that bodies with prior immunity can catch them each year, sometimes twice in a year! People don't mask or vaccinate, so why aren't we demanding clean air in shared public spaces?

Using my tax money, the state of Tennessee attempted to lethality inject a woman with a known vascular condition using the doctor who botched the state's most recent execution. After two attempts Christa Pike did not die, but she does have brain damage. Call it what it is: state-sanctioned torture.

It's not about whether Pike deserved to die for what she did, but about whether we should pay for a system where someone with a vascular disorder can be injected twice with a solution of unknown origin by someone who has a history of botching executions and left brain damaged. That's torture.

it’s also bad because america has a lot of very important functions deferred to state level government, and it is pretty clearly bad for governance for 80% of the country to live under de-facto competitive authoritarianism

Just learned that Tennessee is buying its lethal injection drugs on the “gray market” as companies have stopped selling it to states. The "gray market" is the same place athletes buy steroids and people without insurance access GLP1s. No lab certification, no knowledge of origin.

I know several writers in the local scene have been duped in this way. Yes, all the agents who sell have full client lists. Years spent querying them when their inboxes open is still time better spent than years as a client to someone with no network who can't sell.
110
Angela Sutton (she/her) @drangelasutton.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In that vein, if you write, stay away from agents who became agents after taking a class but haven't sold. Having an agent who has no contacts or ability to sell will put you behind your peers who are still querying. It's an opportunity cost.
110
Angela Sutton (she/her) @drangelasutton.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It's not about whether you'd be good at being a literary agent. If you're interested & motivated, you likely would. It's about whether a class will offer you the foothold and network and years of history you need to be credible. It won't.
110
Angela Sutton (she/her) @drangelasutton.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In case it needs to be said, don't pay for classes that teach you how to be a literary agent. I've met so many "literary agents" with no contacts at the big 5 who haven't sold a thing, yet have a list of writer clients who badly wanted to be able to call themselves agented.

This isn't about whether or not Pike deserved to die for what she did. It's about whether or not we feel comfortable giving a state the power to judge this and botch this.
