Carl Giles was a fascinating man. A few months after this he was with the Coldstream Guards when they liberated Bergen-Belsen. The German camp commander got excited and kept banging on about how much of a fan of Giles war cartoons he was. Kept asking for a signed drawing. /1

Seasonal reminder that Chris Rea is from Middlesbrough. So "Driving Home for Christmas" is a wistful song about being stuck on the A1 just south of Doncaster, gagging for a piss.

How did western Cold War Navies work together in practice? My article on the development of Royal Navy tactical doctrine in the cold war is out (link at end). It explans how year after year of Royal Navy work on classified doctrine was vital for RN and NATO success. This is a shameless plug. 1/x

OK I know this might be a bit of overexcitement speaking, but...could this be the attack on HMS Fearless during Operation Substance, July 1941?

A large number of History posts at Britain's universities have already gone, and many more are under threat. In my view we could lose nearly a third of posts. The @royalhistsoc.bsky.social has prepared a toolkit for colleagues at risk, which is here: blog.royalhistsoc.org/2022/05/24/s...

Treatises on navigation were essential for the safety of early modern sailors. Many of them are available online! This amazing cover comes from the 1640 edition of The Safeguard of Saylers, originally published in 1590. Find it here: buff.ly/4fSGkbI 🗃️ 📜 📚 #oldbooks #maritimehistory

Dr Clarke has joined us over on BlueSky - welcome Alex 😊 Well worth a follow for naval history folk 😎 No pressure, but if you tag appropriate posts with #NavalHistory, they'll turn up on the naval history feed, and also in broader hashtag searches (or hashtag searches of just your posts).

@finger-post.blog Hi Alison, would you be interested in writing a blog about your work for @globalmarhist.bsky.social? I'd love to get some more interesting stuff about Arctic/Antarctic exploration on the site. Especially about the more ignominious stuff.
