I would say that extractive reading is a problem in academic spaces & more generally. People read to extract not to engage. AI is making this even worse (it's AI's modality, after all).

For my editor’s letter, I wrote that, in 2026, devoting a WIRED issue to women might feel regressive or obvious. I'd argue it's necessary. It’s also personal: I started my career at WIRED 17 years ago. I’ve spent a lot of those years grappling with what it means to be an ambitious woman at work.

Women Still Face Too Much Bullshit—in Silicon Valley and Beyond
WIRED dedicating an entire issue to women in 2026 might seem regressive, or obvious, or even unnecessary. We disagree.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see a dragon sitting on a pile of treasure. A speech bubble pointing off panel reads, “Dragon, why do you have all this treasure?”
In the second panel we zoom in on the dragons face. He simply says “shiny”.
In the third panel we pan to the left and see that there is a crow standing next to the dragon on the treasure.
In the fourth panel we zoom in on the crows face. He says “hell yeah”.
