Interesting piece on personality in the Washington Post, they talked to @tedmond.bsky.social and @tuckerdrob.bsky.social about changing personality, birth order, genetics effects… (but no @dingdingpeng.the100.ci cameo on birthorder!)

New research is challenging assumptions about what determines our personality — and showing that you can change it.

The biggest gain was for rare variants. In whole-exome sequencing data, 5 genes reached FDR<1% using measured fluid intelligence alone. With measured + imputed scores, that became 26. Fourteen of those are established developmental-disorder genes.

Abdel Abdellaoui @dr-appie.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Adding imputed scores increased the number of independent genome-wide significant SNPs from 390 to 550 (increase of 40%). Polygenic scores also became more predictive of measured cognitive performance in independent cohorts.

Abdel Abdellaoui @dr-appie.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Our final imputation correlated r=0.46 with measured fluid intelligence, versus a test–retest correlation of ~0.60. It preserved the relevant genetic signal reasonably well, while reducing evidence of ascertainment bias.

Abdel Abdellaoui @dr-appie.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The hard part was making sure imputed scores really measured fluid intelligence, rather than the other traits used to predict it. We tested this extensively, using genomic SEM, genetic correlations, and within-family GWASs.

Abdel Abdellaoui @dr-appie.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Only ~62% of @ukbiobank.ac.uk participants completed the fluid-intelligence test, and those who did tend to be more highly educated. We imputed scores for the rest using a range of correlated traits, from education to cheese intake, motorway speeding, and walking for pleasure.

Genetic similarity between partners has intensified throughout the 20th century
Nature Human Behaviour, Published online: 18 August 2026; doi:10.1038/s41562-026-02555-9We developed a method that detects the genetic footprint of partner choice without requiring the input of partners’ genotypes. Instead, it reconstructs maternal and paternal genomes within a single individual, capturing half of each parental genome. Applied to nearly half a million people in the UK and Estonia, our method reveals partner similarity that has intensified for height and educational attainment over the past six decades.
