LA is HOT. But does it have to be this hot? Did you know shade from a single tree can drop temps by 20° or more? Yet working-class neighborhoods like South LA, East LA, and the Valley get the least tree coverage and bear the brunt of extreme heat. Let's finally cool things down for everyone.

#OTD in 2018, optical physicist Dr. Donna Strickland became the third woman to win the #Nobel Prize in Physics and the first in 55 years. Strickland (+Drs. Ashkin & Mourou) won for advancing the science of lasers & creating extremely useful tools out of laser beams. 🧵 #WomenInSTEM #physics
A color portrait of the optical physicist and Nobel laureate Dr. Donna Strickland smiling warmly at the camera. Born in 1959, her historical significance is cemented as the third woman to ever win the Nobel Prize in Physics, which she achieved in 2018 for her revolutionary breakthroughs in laser technology. She has shoulder-length greying hair with straight bangs, black rectangular-framed glasses, and an authentic, open-mouthed expression showing a prominent smile. She is posed leaning forward slightly, wearing a crisp white blouse underneath a structured, dark grey textured blazer. Pinned meticulously to her left lapel is the distinctive, circular gold Nobel Prize medal lapel pin, a visual anchor highlighting her monumental achievements. The setting is a brightly lit, modern office environment with a clean, softly blurred background featuring a touch of green foliage. The composition is clean and centered, emphasizing a brilliant, highly approachable, and celebrated pioneer in science.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

A black-and-white portrait of Dr. Margaret Allen (born 1948), the pioneering American cardiothoracic surgeon who became the first woman to perform a heart transplant and founded the heart transplant program at the University of Washington Medical Center. She is positioned in the center of the frame against a softly blurred, natural outdoor background of dense foliage or hedges. She wears a dark top over a light-colored, knit turtleneck collar that frames her neck. Her long, wavy hair is pulled back. She wears large, thin-rimmed circular aviator-style eyeglasses. Dr. Allen looks directly forward into the camera with a neutral, calm, and composed expression, conveying a sense of quiet determination, focus, and intellectual strength. The composition uses natural, soft lighting that minimizes harsh shadows on her face. The overall mood is serious, professional, and dignified, underscoring her historic significance as a trailblazer for women in medicine and surgery.

#Tennis legend Althea Gibson died #OTD in 2003. * First Black player to win a Grand Slam title (1956) & #Wimbledon (1957) * Female Athlete of the Year (AP), 1957 & 1958 * 11 Grand Slam wins * First Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour, 1964 #SportsHistory
A composite black-and-white image features two historic photographs of Althea Neale Gibson (1927–2003), the trailblazing Black athlete who helped shatter racial barriers in professional sports. On the left, an action shot captures Gibson mid-match on a grass tennis court, charging forward with fierce intensity and physical prowess. She wears a classic, pristine white tennis dress with a pleated skirt billowing around her legs, paired with matching white socks and tennis shoes. Her face is focused in deep concentration as she extends her right arm back, gripping her racket tightly while her left arm balances her athletic frame. An out-of-focus crowd fills the stands in the background. On the right, a triumphant celebration portrait shows Gibson holding the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish after her historic victory at Wimbledon. Shrouded in a heavy white collared track jacket or robe, she beams with an enthusiastic, wide-toothed smile, her short, naturally textured hair neatly styled. In her left hand, she holds a massive, intricately detailed circular silver trophy plate facing the camera, while a massive, vibrant bouquet of celebratory flowers stands at her right hip. An older woman in a wide-brimmed hat smiles warmly from just behind her left shoulder amidst a blurring crowd. The overall mood shifts dynamically from intense, powerful athletic determination to proud, historic joy. This poignant layout encapsulates her barrier-breaking journey to becoming the first Black athlete to win a Grand Slam title.

Constance Baker Motley's strategic legal mind fundamentally reshaped the legal landscape of desegregation. As the principal female attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, she was a leading legal architect of the #CivilRights movement. She died #OTD in 2005. 🧵
A black-and-white close-up portrait of Constance Baker Motley (September 14, 1921 – September 28, 2005), the trailblazing civil rights attorney and first Black woman appointed as a federal judge. Photographed against a plain, neutral background, she poses facing forward with her torso angled slightly to the right, looking just past the camera. She wears her dark hair styled in a voluminous, soft-curled bob with a side part. Her expression is warm and confident, marked by a slight, serene smile and direct, engaged eyes. She is dressed in her black judicial robes, featuring structured pleats down the front, accessorized with simple white button earrings and a delicate bead necklace peeking through the V-neckline. The composition uses soft, flattering lighting that highlights her features, creating a dignified, commanding, and historically significant mood that reflects her trailblazing legal legacy.
