This graph is a good reason to introduce my new paper: By Generation and by Design: A Review of the Empirical Rent Control Literature. This paints a (somewhat) misleading picture of rent control evidence because it groups all rent control together regardless of design feature.

it is funny how many leftists, particularly internationally, are waving the Zohran flag while fundamentally misunderstanding why Zohran is as popular as he is (he actually gives a shit about making housing more affordable and combatting crime, not just LARPing as a authoritarian communist)

I know this is unpopular but I actually think Backrooms was my second favorite horror movie of the year. I've liked it better than most any other horror movie before or since then (only exception is Bone Temple, but I love love love the new 28 Year Later movies. What a delightful surprise).

Singling out Newsom doesn't seem fair. Not a single state achieved any of these items. They're all easier said then done, and not at all controlled by governors.

The developers are willing to fork over pallets of cash to invest into our grid, which is filled with amortized assets at end of life. Idk how we can afford to say no. I'm basically at the point now where I think anything that increases utilization of the grid is defacto Good.

Joe Biden passed the biggest climate change legislation ever and it has been crickets. Environmental groups gave him little credit for it (and many seem to be focused on Israel rather than the environment now?) and discussion of climate issues has moved from view. Did it ever really matter to them?

I got a poll text and one question was "What is your opinion of charter schools and selective enrollment scools?" I have very different opinions on those two things. Way to spoil your own poll question bozos. I put "No opinion" because I refuse to let either one push me to rate improperly.

Average rents in Lincoln Square have gone up 25-35% in the last five years. As of 2023, 44% of renters pay over 30% of income on rent. Lincoln Square+North Center have lost 12% of affordable units due to conversions and lack of building. These are policy failures unaddressed by Ald. Matt Martin.

So what is the steel man case against the Quantum Center being built on the South Side? Like there does seem to be some antagonism towards it, that I am quick to dismiss as NIMBY bs towards a genuinely good project, but what is the most good faith argument for what they are trying to accomplish?

I am curious how he is going to do the general. Is he going to tack to the center, and potentially annoy his base? Or is he going to lean into his base and hope that goving full leftist and running hard against AIPAC will get him entusiasm to win in a more conservative electorate. Exciting to see!

I would be surprised if Johnson is not #2 or #3. Like who are the progressive/DSA-aligned groups going to consolidate around besides him? Mendoza looks like she is taking the Vallas lane though maybe Giannoulias will push her out of that? It is going to be interesting gaming this one out.

I just think the CTU's actions over the last four years has not put them in the best light, and they don't deserve power over the city any more than the FOP does.

Senior Feline Facility Manager @doubtofbuddha.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
It may not even be what is best for the students considering our outcomes/$ spent. (And trying to gut the selective enrollment schools seems extremely short-sighted). Now I am not a charter school guy, and don't want them in charge of the school district either.
100
Senior Feline Facility Manager @doubtofbuddha.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
But the CTU's instincts seem to try to maximize their power/money at the expense of the city. Which is fair, I mean that is what they should be doing for their union members. However, what is good for the union members and the union isn't neccessarily what is best for the rest of the city.

Senior Feline Facility Manager @doubtofbuddha.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Oh, the FOP is absolutely worse. I voted for Johnson over Vallas for a reason and I don't regret my vote at all even if Johnson has sucked. And yeah, I am definitely going to try to get a non-CTU candidate elected in my district, though I suspect that won't succeed with where I am in the city.

Brought to you by city council being asleep at the wheel when it comes to housing policy — $2300/mo in Lakeview for a 1 bed is crazy — expect rents to be 7% higher by the time we have elections in February.
Rent 1/1 is $2295/mo

Yeah, I was concerned by his plan to expand the police force, but I am willing to give him a chance to make his case. If he is just another crypto-Republican then I will vote accordingly. (I doubt that at this point though, as he doesn't have the... history Vallas did).

Public sector unions can end up in elected positions where they are both management and the workers, leading to disasters like the new Chicago Schools budget or the cancer that are the FOP in Chicago and other cities. I don't really want public sector unions busted, but this can't continue.

The CTU is going to war with the rest of the residents of the city with their repeated excessively bad decisions regarding school district finances. If they would stop, it wouldn't be neccessary.

Yes, both of these organizations should not have the power they do in the city. If we can get a center-left candidate who can work to keep them both in line while generally being competent they will have my vote for sure. I am hopeful that Alexi Giannoulias can be this guy, but we will see.
