I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.

This May 2021 announcement affects our daily lives even now. There was already a steady stream of right-wing anti-mask harassment. On top of that, many centrists and leftists began assuming anyone in a mask was unvaccinated. I was most recently confronted by this offensive assumption one week ago.

I'm surprised mask wearing didn't even catch on in public restrooms. Not inhaling the fecal plume should appeal even to people who deny exhaled aerosol transmission. Masks can also mitigate fecal-oral transmission by getting in the way of accidental face touching.

Once again. It would have been MUCH safer to quarantine the ship at a proper facility in the region it became stuck in, in the first place. Hundreds of staff and crew that never needed to be involved. Lots of countries that did not need to be exposed.

Some "dust masks" are real particulate respirators, and some are comfort masks for nuisance levels of non-hazardous dust. Using the same terms for both is confusing so I call N95s respirators and try to always remember to include "nuisance" when discussing "nuisance dust masks."
