There's a reason why Somerville hasn't had a traffic death in 4 years. The city isn't perfect, but they've made a concerted effort to design many streets around people and not cars. You can still drive, but you're going to have to do so slowly and while paying attention.

Somerville is intentionally making roads harder to drive on. It’s getting results. - The Boston Globe
To make roads safer, the city says, sometimes you have to put some obstacles in drivers' way.

The "massive weekly grocery haul" is a symptom of car-dependent sprawl, not a universal rule of life. Healthy cities don't force you to drive to a warehouse store. Good design makes grabbing fresh food a quick, passive part of your daily walk or bike commute. These straw men arguments bore me.

For decades, we’ve been told growing cities require more traffic, noise and asphalt. But places like Delft prove that we can move more with less, while gaining beauty, safety, sociability and flexibility. That’s what curbing traffic looks like: not the absence of movement, but the abundance of life.
In this single frame of Delft, a young couple cycles effortlessly on a canal-side path. A tram glides by in the background. Flowers spill into the foreground. Church spires punctuate the skyline. No single mode dominates the scene; each has been given its own space to thrive.

My hot take on drivers encountering any vulnerable road user is that even if cyclists/ pedestrians etc aren’t following the law they still don’t deserve to be hit/injured/killed or honked at and actually should be yielded to in most situations. This is unpopular opinion in our society sadly.

I took this in while working in Riga Latvia years ago. A busy arterial road cutting off the downtown from the waterfront, and this is the way to get to the water for pedestrians. On the one hand, at least they have a “connection”…on the other hand it turns pedestrians into mole people. #WarOnWalking
A busy highway/arterial road separating Riga, Latvia’s beautiful historic downtown with its public waterfront. The pedestrian connection is an underground walkway, with stairs downward, and a tight, dark connection under the road, raising issues of safety and comfort and relegating pedestrians to second class citizens with all the priority going to cars and drivers. #UrbanTruth

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.
The famous Copenhagen shopping street where it opens up into a triangular public place and gathering place, filled with people.

We need to stop treating bike infrastructure as purely recreational. True mobility is about everyday utility. When you can safely take the bike to grab groceries and easily detour to the playground, that's what a human-scale city actually looks like.
