SPPOOOSSSHHH... PHHHFFFFFFF... SSSSSSHHHHHHHH... To paraphrase Bob Ross, you have to make the noises when looking at #paleoart, otherwise it doesn't work. 2018 illustration of giant Triassic ichthyosaurs Shonisaurus, surfacing in waters that once covered Nevada. #art #fossil #paleontology #sciart
Three giant ichthyosaurs emerge from the water in front of a hazy, cloudy sky. The left animal has the arms of a large squid emerging from its mouth, and the right has surfaced far enough to show its front left flopper. The central animal looms above us, eclipsing the sun with its enormous snout. Two pterosaurs fly past the closest specimen, dwarfed by the emergent swimmer like pigeons circling a cathedral spire.

result of this week's special 2 hour #Paleostream flocking! for this flocking we spent 2 hours on just Spicomellus, however, i spent an additional 6 hours on my piece #paleoart #sciart #scicomm #dinosaur
on a sunny and slightly windy day in Jurassic Morocco, a Spicomellus grazes on the abundant macroalgae by the shoreline. the warm sun and calm water trigger a mass hatching event of thalattosuchians who scramble into the seawater around the Spicomellus, two Scheenstia look on at the oncoming swarm. the Spicomellus is unfazed and continues grazing

Spicomellus is a surprisingly derived (unexpected) ankylosaur (large herbivorous armoured dinosaurs) known primarily from osteoderms, these ostoederms are special and unlike any other ankylosaur osteoderms as they fuse to the ribs during ontogeny, there's also evidence it had a tail weapon based on its tail vertebrae, but no such weapon has been identified yet. it would've had incredibly large spikes all over its body

Scheenstia is a genus of durophagous fish distantly related to alligator gars. it was very tall and thin in profile

thalattosuchians are a group of fully marine crocodile relatives with fish-like tails and tiny forelimbs

New #paleoart on #FossilFriday: #Tiktaalik sees the world. Discussions of early #tetrapods often focus on limbs and lungs, but major changes also took place in their eyes. Seeing further and clearer than any animal before, they were the first to clearly see sunsets, stars, and the moon. #sciart
Tiktaalik slugs its way over a muddy bank in a flooded Devonian landscape while the sun sets over the horizon. Banks of pink and purple clouds loom in front of distant streaks of orange as clear turquoise sky peeks through cloudless regions. Various trees and shrubs stand tall above purple water glistening with gold wavelets. With vision that could probably see in the UV spectrum and eyes beginning to adapt for the infinite visual range provided in aerial habitats, Titaalik pauses to take this all in, being among the first animals that can see the natural world in such detail.

All which is to say - the next time you admire sunsets or the night sky, consider what this owes to events of 375 million years ago. When the first vertebrates struggled out of the water they rapidly developed eyes that were much sharper and clearer than those of their fishy ancestors, vision being of variable utility in most freshwater habitats. Millions of years on, what probably started as a means to navigate and find prey allows us to observe and enjoy the natural world with a sense of awe and wonder.

Without active mountain building the peaks of Lemuria slowly erode into hills. This dry and often times quite chilly habitat is not a good place for reptiles and so mammals dominate these highlands. This piece takes place during late morning on a spring day.

Brachiosaurus/Giraffatitan: An Artistic History in Four Parts (Art by Zdenek Burian, Roger Payne, Steve Kirk, and Mark Witton)
A trio of heavyset brachiosaurs, long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs, stand almost fully submerged in a calm river. Their movement kicks up sediment on the riverbed, adding to the murkiness beneath the surface.A tail-dragging brachiosaur with a muscular build ambles across a muddy shoreline, backed by a lush landscape with distant rolling hills. A pair of long-tailed pterosaurs soar overhead.A slender, towering brachiosaur feeds from from a conifer, dwarfed by the colossal trunks of the surrounding trees. The forest floor is blanketed by ferns and saplings, all bathed in dappled sunlight.Four towering brachiosaurs with svelte, graceful frames dance through the shallow surf, chasing each other playfully before a cloudy sky. Various pterosaurs flit about the giant dinosaurs, emphasizing their immense scale.
