More batters hit .300 in 2026 (7) than did in 1968 (6). I feel like there's a lot of people would be stunned by that. It certainly wasn't "but launch angle" back then, and it's not really now, either.

Max Scherzer’s kids run from the dugout to the mound to take him out of the game then run back screaming and crying after he tells them he’s not fucking going anywhere, get the fuck off my mound

All this TV Top 100 talk and no Brockmire to be found. East Bound and Down made the cut but there is no better baseball show than Brockmire!

Thanks Meg, because of your Mr. Plow jingle themed post, now I’m reading about a pitcher named Tom “Plow Boy” Morgan who tied a Major League Baseball record for most hit batsmen in an inning (3) in June 1954.

New Episode! An accident connects to another years later in this story about luck - or bad luck. Lidle was an unsung hero of the Moneyball A’s and an opinionated pitcher with questionable work ethic. His career would end tragically in the midst of controversy podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s...

New Episode! This week we covered Harold Arlin, the voice of baseball’s first ever radio broadcast. Something we take for granted now-a-days was a novelty at the time. Harold himself didn’t believe in it but it would change the game forever! podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s...

“He was socked in the jaw by Lou Gehrig in 1925 after making a crack to the effect that the Yankee first baseman’s mother smelled of sauerkraut. The umpire ruled that Gehrig had been provoked by unsportsmanlike means and allowed him to finish the game.”

(Hey, the fact that two teams have been sold in the last few months should tell you something about how serious owners are about breaking the union to get a cap. If they thought they were gonna win, they’d be waiting.)

Due to illness and a sore throat affecting the ability to speak clearly, we are postponing this week’s episode until next Wednesday. Lots of great stories from baseball history in our archives until then - like the time all the umpires quit (ep 98) or our episode on Ty Cobb’s mom & dad (ep 73)!

The churn through SP is sooo much higher, you’re right teams just don’t allow qualified pitchers ERA’s to get that high anymore.

Doing Baseball History! @doingbaseball.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Definitely gets worse as starters workloads dwindle on the other side of things, a reliever with a 4.50 ERA is horrendous despite being historically not terrible but in modern baseball a reliever giving up a run every other inning is not acceptable to most - ie Jeff Hoffman

Doing Baseball History! @doingbaseball.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
League average was 4.52 in 2006 and now that 5th worse amount qualified pitchers on the eve of September. @megrowler.fangraphs.com and @benlindbergh.bsky.social has this been discussed?

2006 qualified pitchers - look at some of the names all 4.90+

Doing Baseball History! @doingbaseball.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Legit question, 4 outta 10 of the worst ERA leaders in baseball would have a worse ERA if they threw 6 innings and allowed 3 runs - generally defined as a quality start. Do we need to change that definition as pitchers have gotten way better? A 4.50 ERA used to just be a decent 3 & 4 starter.

Ah damn. Doucet was basically Quebec's Vin Scully, he called Expos games from season #1 in 1969 all the way to the relocation, and then transitioned to calling Jays games in French after that. Basically invented the French glossary of baseball terminology.

Silvio García died 49 years ago today. Was he the greatest Cuban position player prior to Miñoso? It’s gotta be between Torriente, Oms, and Silvio, I’d imagine.

my parents used to drag me to garage sales as a kid and I hated them until I discovered you could find old baseball biographies there. Bob Gibson’s From Ghetto to Glory was an honest, pull no punches perspective of a black athlete’s experience that I hadn’t been exposed to before reading it

Umpires had it tough back in the day, just ask Brick Owens who earned his nickname by catching a brick in the face from an angry fan. Surprisingly, that wasn’t the worst head injury we talk about. Honestly, it is a miracle this man survived his job! podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s...

Totally, glad people are able to cheer without the thought of reprisal. Our next episode is a lot of stories of violence after controversial calls, as I delicately put it “don’t let anyone tell you that you take baseball to seriously until you have the blood of a policeman running down your chin.”
