Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets
The ancient two-panel Drake meme. On the top, he's looking away in disgust and holding his hand up. The text next to it says "Truck-or-treat". On the bottom, he looks pleased and is pointing toward text that says "Close your street".

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

The Urbanist and Ryan Packer in particular did an amazing job raising awareness of this issue early and often! Without that journalism and efforts from transit advocates, things would likely have turned out differently. Thank you, and this again highlights why local media matters.

It doesn't work. The first question I would always ask was, "Does one person ever perform more than one of these roles? What if someone is on vacation? What if they change jobs?" Never got a no once we started digging into it.

I have been beating this drum for a decade. It's basically the default position in technical docs IA (and if we're real, lots of other IA) that if we just figure out what role the user is, we can show them just the stuff that they need.

It is, btw, entirely a product of Wilson Derangement Syndrome that we are still talking about why a press conference in July didn't happen sooner than it did. If you rely on mainstream press for your news, you'll think this is all that's happening (that and rampant murder sprees across Seattle ofc)

I don't need to belabor how incredibly shitty the coverage of Mayor Wilson is, but a lot of outlets have reported inaccurate information, seemingly in service to their obsessive negative coverage of the mayor.

I've NO doubt an LLM can construct a bad legal brief; I've got every doubt about a lawyer who submits a document to the court that they neither wrote nor read.

This also reminds me so much of the 20th century programs aimed at standardizing childcare in racialized families. Like, I'm not arguing that this guy's bad behavior is an important cultural practice, but "fixing" parenting practices is a trojan horse with such a long history.

A statistic that haunts me because it is 100% true and shocking and useless in advocacy precisely because it is true and shocking: Policy that enables a 1-car lifestyle rather than 2 is equivalent to giving a family a $25,000 annual pay raise.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

Yes yes yes yes. I have been on this since i was made to read Sal Khan's book in 2023 for work. It, like all these arguments, STARTS from the assumption that most people will not get what they need, in this case, kids won't have good teachers, and treats it like an immutable fact.

This pushback is so confusing to me. When I talk to parents (let's be real, mothers) about how they spend their time, the modal response is "what time? I just drive the kids around to all their stuff." The fact that kids don't drive in a driver-oriented world is hugely consequential.

I know some people are obliged to do it on their own, but pitching an AI product to address the difficulties of single parenting is not compelling to me. It's like Sal Khan's argument that education has to go AI because most kids will never have a good teacher.
