The Museum of Fine Arts Houston has announced its acquisition of Tamara de Lempicka's 1923 painting "Her Sadness"! Until this year, the work had remained in the same family for 90 years.

A long, narrow painting of an unsmiling, white-skinned woman with straight red hair (cut off at about ear length) wearing dark clothing and a tan winter scarf, against an outdoor background with a leafless tree, and a tumble of buildings. She stands sideways such that the viewer sees one hand almost entirely within the pocket of the woman's skirt or pants. She turns toward the viewer so as to offer a 3/4 view of her face.

I recently got two kittens. This is Felix and Dorothea (aka Dottie or Dot). Felix is sleeping hard after playing in packing paper and Dot is lounging. Some good rest after hard play.

White Siberian kitten is sleeping on back with arms over his head. Another white one with dark tail and face lounges on the lower level of a glass coffee table while looking up at me.

Kikyo (Japanese bellflower) inspired sweets begin appearing in late summer. This delicate purple nerikiri is crafted into a stylized bellflower shape.

'Genji-no-tei', the main garden of Rozan-ji, is modeled on 'The Tale of Genji' scrolls, which often feature swirling cloud decorations.

Kikyo inspired sweet from Oimatsu. The delicate purple mochi exterior is branded with a bellflower design.

I’ve started a chronic fatigue treatment to help stop the terrible energy crashes I go through a few times a week (heavy brain fog, can barely move, etc). Among the first steps is paring life back far enough so the crashes end, continuing this for awhile, and then slowly building from it. Here goes!

It’s starting to get very painful not underlining passages while reading Magda Szabó’s Abigail. It’s a library book so I can’t. Marking passages helps somehow and I’m not entirely sure why. Perhaps so I don’t grab a stranger on the street and start reciting passage? maybe.

There used to be a white streetcar that ran between Bayonne and Biarritz; in the summer, an open car was attached to it: the caboose.
Everyone wanted to ride in that car: through a rather empty countryside, one enjoyed the view, the movement, the fresh air, all at the same time. Today neither the streetcar nor the caboose exists, and the trip from Biarritz is anything but a pleasure. This is not to apply a mythic embellishment to the past, or to express regrets for a lost youth by pretending to regret a streetcar. This is to say that the art of living has no history: it does not evolve: the pleasure which vanishes vanishes for good, there is no substitute for it. Other pleasures come, which replace nothing. No progress in pleasures, nothing but mutations.

The Sweet Dove Died has turned out to be one of my favorite reads of this year. This was unexpected as I haven’t enjoyed Pym’s other work. I loved the caustic writing, the icy heart at the center, the moments of ‘longing and loathing’ being so intertwined. Both brutal and human. #NYRBWomen25
