Oh I shd add: Deisseroth’s work was (say it w me!) supported with public funding through federal science agencies incl NIH, NSF, and DARPA. And I daresay few political deciders in 2004 would have been excited to put algal proteins in HEK cells or neurons. Scientists knew, though.

It was silly and there were some cute parts but I feel like if the author is ostensibly pulling from her experiences, why take quite so much liberty with the context? I feel like this could have easily been done working within realistic structures.

In addition, in NO WORLD do the Universities themselves give out renewable, multi-million dollar grants to professors, let alone postdocs! That is just not a thing. Also, Malcolm's storyline of getting kicked out of lab and then his parents "won't pay for the next quarter" like literally what??

Also, it seems like they made the main love interest a postdoc for the movie to avoid possible legal issues but he is certainly treated like a professor. I literally have been at no institution where the PhD students address a postdoc as "Dr" or where they get such fancy nice offices.

Even ignoring the uncountable biosafety and PPE violations, nothing about it reflects even the fundamental structure of how research universities work. Olive is 2 yrs into a PhD but also 1 year out (NO) and looking to move across the country to finish, as if PhD students are independent scientists

Made the poor decision to watch "The Love Hypothesis" this weekend and if you have any experience in academic science environments I strongly urge you not to. If the author, as claimed, indeed has a PhD in neuroscience from an accredited university I can only conclude that they wrote it as rage bait

Also: those curves show lots of funding that DID go out the door this year. That is the result of heroic efforts by the remaining civil servants at NIH. People are quietly working and many quietly fighting like hell to keep NIH going despite all this. Please thank your NIH colleagues and contacts.
