Show me the money! Why do running red lights and driving down a motorway the wrong way have lower fines than high-vis on a scooter?
Comment & Analysis: While road deaths and injury collisions involving motorists have spiked this year, there has been a classic moral panic against e-scooters -- and the winner is not road safety but the Government, which has been allowed to pretend that it is acting on road safety. I'm in a better position to say this than most, as I'm not exactly a fan of e-scooters.

Department of Transport defends effective 29% cut in active travel budget, says councils should use funding as “effectively as possible”
The Department of Transport has defended freezing active travel funding at its 2020 level, effectively amounting to a 29% cut over the last six years. Yesterday, campaigners and an opposition spokesperson criticised the unwillingness of the Government to keep active travel in line with inflation. As reported by this website, to keep pace with inflation since October 2020, the €360 million-a-year investment in active travel would need to rise to over €510 million today.

Dublin’s long-delayed North Circular Road active travel project is starting construction, but what will it look like?
Comment & Analysis: The North Circular Road active travel project is about to go to construction, so what's the point in dissecting it now? First, to give people an overview of what to expect, but more importantly to say: Dublin City needs to be doing better and outline some of the ways how. Here's how we covered this project so far:

Car parking to be retained, while walking and cycling expected to be mixed on Cork project
An under-construction active travel project in Cork City is to be changed after large protests from residents -- a group against the project said it was a "huge win", while the council today would not comment on whether people walking and cycling will be mixed on shared paths on sections of the project. The main change is that the number of trees to be cut down is going back to 10.

Exactly. In temperate climates like the UK and eastern USA, forests will rebound naturally. Stop mowing, control grazing, and you will get a normal succession of habitats that culminates with forests. And hundreds of thousands of plastic tree guards not needed either.

It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.

-- Just 1.1km added to network in 2026 with 6km expected next year. LONG READ: Everybody is frustrated by the slow delivery of Dublin City's active travel network, this month's Mobility and Public Realm Committee was told, but councillors sounded at breaking point, with a number commenting that they'd be dead or long retired from politics before the network is finished.

It was great to listen to @tomflood.bsky.social ‘s talk on communications and road safety in TCD last night. And I have a letter in the Irish Times today which shines a light on how careless driving is just kinda accepted.
Letter to the THE IRISH TIMES.
Sir, - Seán Canney, the Minister of State with responsibility for road safety, stated at an informal meeting of EU transport ministers in Dublin Castle on Monday that "99 per cent of the people on the roads drive with due care".
May I ask where these roads are? Because they sound idyllic - perfect for cycling my primary-school children to school.
In contrast, on our 2km commute this morning, I counted 11 cars in the bus lane, seven drivers looking at their phones in traffic, one woman putting on her make-up and another eating her breakfast. And at least five drivers speeding at least 20km/h or more over the speed limit. - Yours, etc,
NICK ROYLE, Blackrock,
Dublin.
