🎯 yup, Yud and the rationalists proceed from first principles that most would not agree with or would frankly just find silly. At that point it's apologetics rather than reasoning.

That's because they disagree with the entire chain that gets you to thinking that the end could be nigh. Nobody's going to argue about the details of the rapture, if it will happen swiftly or slowly, what the criteria are, etc etc, if they don't think the rapture is going to happen.

Look, I'm not trying to dunk on this guy, but I think more people need to understand that AI is functioning as a religion right now. "There would be actual counterarguments against Jesus" is a thing you see logicians arguing in medieval times.

That literally is how we treat unfalsifiable statements: to ignore and/or laugh at the ones that we think are weird. If someone believes the rapture will come at some point (any point in the future), we don't have to "disprove" it or make "counterarguments."

I see people victim-blame and try to logic-out the Cornell 7 rape case. "Why would she go into the frat house? Why would she drink?" etc. It's easier than thinking about how many men have done similar things to women, and whether men *they personally know* have harassed or assaulted women.

I do not think we should have a death penalty. I don't think it is any kind of deterrent. I think it's barbaric. I think it makes us all worse people. All of us. And we just don't have to do this to ourselves. We could abolish it, and we should.

People usually resort to “it’s a complicated issue” about this sort of thing when they know what’s happening is wrong but feel afraid to stand up against it because doing so is hard So they start trying to rationalize doing nothing, saying “it’s complicated”

You can't cancel someone NOT VOTING by yelling at them here. All you're going to do is make them mad, and make yourself effort. If you're being strategic, why don't you put your effort where it would make a difference?

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

I already own an ebike and can avoid owning a car. But lots of people drive gas cars daily out of necessity. Only the rich can problem-solve their ways out of everything driving up prices (climate disasters, oil prices, trade war). And it's astonishing to see Democrats do almost nothing in response.

Longtermerists view AI like a gigantic trolley problem: Because it will be so beneficial for future generations of the human race (who dwarf the current living beings in number), it is worth sacrificing an arbitrarily large number of currently living humans in order to achieve it.

We should have taken a stand back then. We should have. We should have defended TPS. We should have spent the time to explain that people seeking asylum are not "illegals" and they're not "circumventing" the system. We should have fought harder for them.

you may think i am joking but i am not. they’re talking about AI the way protestant zealots talked about the end times. in both cases we are hearing people talk about themselves — their desires, their lust for destruction, their yearning to trample their rivals underfoot.

FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.

If she followed through with this "outreach" campaign and showed up at a rally with or eagerly takes the endorsement of some D-list RFK-style health woo grifters, it will cost her many more votes in the Democratic primary than it could ever plausibly gain her either there or in the general election.

Unpopular opinion: When someone is factually wrong about something important—eg vaccination—telling them that they’re wrong is treating them with respect. The condescending thing to do is indulge them, act like they have a point, as if the thing you know to be wrong might be at least somewhat right.

The bar for progressive policies is: "did this unilaterally solve the entire gigantic systemic issue without making a single person sad?" The bar for conservative policies is: "did the people pushing this yell out the name of a real problem before doing something unrelated, cruel and ineffective?"

AOC just mildly disavowed "woke 1" and it sparked a weeks-long, ongoing discourse cycle about radicalism on the left. The idea that prominent Dems "disavowing" far-left figures will stop the right from talking about them is laughable.

I'm sure she was comfortable (& that's good!). But she just relentlessly helped. It's not that difficult. Love. Care. Help. 💚🌸
