AAA developers realizing the long-tail business model works just fine when the "niche" they're targeting is the audience for their old blockbusters would be the first trendchasing gold rush to actually benefit the industry in over a decade

People forget that the thing that won Trump the popular vote wasn't his popularity. Both parties lost millions of voters, but Biden/Harris lost more of them! In a year where incumbents lost globally, our incumbent went far out of their way to fuck things up for themselves.

The toughness of the combat makes the grind a lot worse, since your main source of healing is from food you have to grow yourself, building up your farm to grow better food takes a regular farm sim level of investment, and later dungeons have really expensive item/cash walls just by themselves.

The wheels start to come off midway through the second dungeon, but the bones of the combat system are strong. You get a lot of combat options but later enemies are so overtuned the most efficient strategies are slogging through Attack-Guard Heal-Guard rotations or gambling on All Or Nothing crits.

Hey folks, added Welcome to Elderfield to my Steam Curator A spooky horror-themed Stardew Valley like farming sim RPG with turn-based combat, and lots of little mysteries to investigate, quests to go on, and some incredible monster artwork. Feels a little World of Horror in some regards. I love it!

Losing my mind while doing some research for my creature design lecture that the closest relative to the maned wolf is the bush dog. Like there has gotta be a fable where the maned wolf took all the leggie from its cousin

more games should steal the ace combat/dynasty warriors narrative design of just having an audio play that triggers as you do the level it has to be one of the most effective frameworks in terms of how sick it is compared to how much it costs

Nothing beats the recurring bit in every Earth Defense Force's endgame where your mission handlers interrupt their grimdark War of the Worlds radioplay to gawk openly at how some random group of 1-4 footsoldiers (you) is brawling with the entire alien invasion force and winning

I'll never get over how, from the leaks, Insomniac's first idea on how to give their game cool character-action combat was to give him Spider-Man Gadgets But Edgier. Instead of cribbing from Ravensoft or Ninja Gaiden they wanted to give Wolverine an X-Crossbow and throwing knives.

You can tell they're being extra careful not to offend anyone because they made the bad guys a "foreign corporation", but they're obviously based off Blackrock and also obviously not Chinese or Indian.

Star Control 2, Way of the Samurai, Dead Rising, Mechanicus, etc. are such great games *because* their campaign is on a strict timer! It's meant to be a fun challenge to test your planning, resourcefulness, and knowledge of the game! Gamers just hate the idea of "missing out" and needing to replay.

voicework in Star Fox 64 vs Star Fox 2026 is the exact same difference between the dubbing for 90s anime and 2020s anime, and it sucks just as much

“this person is bad so their work was always bad” is also a really dangerous view to take because it leads to - unconscious or not - a bias towards “but I do like this other person’s work, ergo they must be a good person” which, as we have seen over and over, is simply not true

One of the best parts of the Dawn of War series is in Retribution, when your lord-general justifies burning an entire planet's worth of soldiers--as well as the planet itself--as the most carefully-mitigated cost for the best strategic outcome he could manage. And he's right! youtu.be/lT5Gy079OWw

I do agree that more recent material emphasizes the "once-legendary" strength of the old Raider tribes and how much they've been reduced by the time of New Vegas, though.

I don't think the non-Khan Raider tribes actually appeared in Fallout besides offhand mentions and a note in the setting bible. Even then, going from that context, they weren't much more of a threat then compared to "now". Ironically, the strongest the Khans have ever been was squatting in Vault 15.

The details emerged amid a legal dispute between company founders. The lawsuit also provides an unexpected look into a studio behind one of the best-reviewed Star Wars games in years

To be fair you also have early-game fodder raider groups like the Jackals, Scorpions, and Vipers who exist just to be easy XP. And the White Legs fit so jarringly closely to old Savage Indian tropes that the narrative itself questions how they've managed to feed themselves this entire time.

RE4-style interaction point jumps, but at any time during the animation you can have Leon dash forward. This does nothing productive and in fact throws you into danger most of the time, but the option is there!

To be fair, becoming a radiation zombie *is* a tangible step towards no longer being cold or hungry! And Mothman doesn't care that much about you eating any of the eggs he leaves all over the place, so his cult has that kind of bountiful harvest going for them!

A grand strategy scenario where all your military units are stranded at the start of the game and you have to either Anabasis them back home or entrench them as rump states would kick too much ass, the map painting crowd would complain.

People give Bethesda endless shit for only understanding the setting through shallow iconography, but they're happy to show they can't even get a grip on the themes Ron Perlman spells out in the first five minutes of every game.
