Listened to Pres. Kotlikoff’s message. I’m glad he included reexamining Greek life -that’s no small thing for a place like Cornell to say to alumni. Im glad to hear him acknowledge that Jane Doe is not unique but that many had similar experiences b/f. Alumni have been sharing their stories. /1

"One mistake university-based academics - including me - often make is we try to say things that are new, and then move on to the next thing. If you want to publish, you've got to advance the field. But in public-facing communications, simple, basic repetition is very important." Do they not teach?

I love pretty much everything by Dostoyevsky; I saw that you're reading the Idiot, also great. Notes from the Underground blew me away (it kind of freaks me now out that I read it as a young teen), and I also love White Nights.

Argos's death was one of the best scenes in the whole movie, I thought. My test for a good translation of the Odyssey is if his death makes me weep; the movie passed that test (by a lot)

It's hard to allow for such migrations, it seems to me, without slipping into old culture-historical models where the engines of (pre-, proto-) history are movements of well-bounded cultural entities (and the nationalist/imperial/colonial discourses these narratives can support)
110
Dimitri Nakassis @dimitrinakassis.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I've been thinking about this more, as someone who has an allergy to mass-migration theories, which equally play into the hands of a colonial and imperial ancient history (e.g., Greek colonization).

Dimitri Nakassis @dimitrinakassis.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
In any case, it's unclear what she means and this stuff isn't in her wheelhouse. I didn't have any problem with the Sea People stuff in the movie, I mostly found it amusing
120
Dimitri Nakassis @dimitrinakassis.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Yes, that's right. I'd say that the current consensus is that convincing evidence for migration into the Aegean is not something that we have in the LBA (Although there is good evidence for increased mobility in the 13th and 12th centuries BCE)

Dimitri Nakassis @dimitrinakassis.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
I wouldn't have called that idea debunked -- the Collapse is too obscure for such declarations -- but it's fair to say, I think, that there's a healthy skepticism of simplistic 'Sea Peoples' narratives in Egyptology, which may be what Wilson is referring to.
140
Dimitri Nakassis @dimitrinakassis.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
My understanding of her sentence is that the debunked idea is not the existence of Sea Peoples (although no ancient text calls them that, I think, and only one gets close) but the idea that they are responsible for the Collapse.

Dimitri Nakassis @dimitrinakassis.bsky.social · 29/07/2026

There's been a decent amount of research into this; a 2018 article concluded that "the hypothesis of a destructive earthquake in Tiryns and Midea, which may have contributed to the end of the LBA Mycenaean palatial period, is unlikely" pubs.geoscienceworld.org/ssa/bssa/art...
