I see the new DG has fallen straight into the politicians' trap of "saying stupid, ill-considered and largely fictional things about AI". Why must they do this?

Someone asked me recently what good public service digital leadership looked like. My answer was long, but essentially boiled down to "not parroting this kind of shit" 👇

The penalty for flipping your number plate on a motorbike (tucking it up for immunity for tunnel tolls and speed cameras) is £100 and no points. How can that make any sense?

A story, nudged out of memory by recent events. Aged about 12, I was in the front seat of my mum's car heading out to Southport. We passed a country lane by the Diglake Farm Shop and I said "that looks weird". I'd seen 4 men getting into two cars, tucked away almost out of sight of the main road.

Nothing makes my head smash into the table faster than yet another clever-clever post about em dashes (yafuckingwn) illustrated by... en dashes. If you don't know the difference you shouldn't be allowed to post anything, anywhere. And you probably say 'pecific'. {Izzy Hands voice: TerWAATT}

Well that filled a Saturday: scampered off train in Herts and realised my coat and keys were still enjoying their journey. To Birmingham. Limped home to get spare keys. Saw the lost souls coming back south. Jumped on train at Euston, all exactly where left. Get a keyring tracker, kids.

We really do need a proper reappraisal of Oprah given some of the absolute frauds and woo she popularised. Dr. Oz. Dr. Phil. That 'psychic surgeon' who was raping hundreds of his followers. The Secret. The Satanic ritual abuse hoax.

I have recently learned that HR people say Haytch Arr a LOT. Feels like some sort of industry shibboleth now. The more senior, the more they haspirate it. Some very weird inversion going on: anyone who breaks with the code probably gets a rapid meeting with, er,

Love this city
A half moon over the Palace of Westminster. A night scene looking south down the river Thames. In the foreground, The Golden Jubilee Bridge looks like the faint tracery of a blue spider's web.

It was bollocks. Not that unusual really for last days of an administration. Stuff gets said, and nobody really cares that it all gets memory holed. Especially when it was total bollocks to appease Mumsnet.

In Whitstable, and my strongest memory of this town is the picture of the hairdresser's sign I took 15 years ago. Don't know if it's still there.
A sign for Gina's hair salon. A graphic of scissors are snipping the G to create a V shape. So it sort of spells VGINA'S

This will not go down well here, but many of the replies to my piggate memories share disbelief about the 'weirdness' of posh people in a way they'd absolutely never dream of doing about almost any cultural tradition. Nobody cries for the rich, sure, but very little is 'weird' to those that do it.

Very much here for St Miriam being called out. She's not a national treasure, she's a fucking liability and pretty much always has been. No idea why her previous broadcasting antics hadn't put her on every single producer's "not in a million years are you insane?" list. More fool them in some ways.

I don't tend to enjoy Blocked and Reported as a matter of style and tone, but their latest dissection of a grifter is compelling. The thread between that and er other cases is that we are fascinated by grifters. Whether they cook, write speeches for their dad, compulsively fundraise, we are gripped

Filey Brigg: a little spike of Yorkshire jabbing into the North Sea. I learnt on this trip that until WW1 it was mostly called "The German Sea", but obviously that needed some rapid revision for obvious reasons. Not sure why 'East' wasn't a better description though?
A seascape: late afternoon clouds with blue sky in between, and a foamy wash of sea on the left, rolling into a thin rocky headland on the right.
