Those making the argument before the court to disqualify Balad leader Sami Abu Shehada from running for Knesset are Itamar Ben Gvir, convicted of supporting a terror org, and attorney Ze'ev Wolf, convicted of murdering a Palestinian in 1992. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

The Court will now consider the ban on Offer Cassif, the Jewish member for Hadash. They're now in a corner: if they uphold the ban, they create a precedent that will be used to ban other leftwing Jewish candidates. If they overturn it, it's looks (talks & walks) like apartheid.

(A more charitable reading of this weird manoeuvre may be that the Supreme Court president is trying to mitigate by stopping short of a ruling that would that would become a lifelong personal ban and a potentially binding precedent. But still.)

Now the Supreme Court, itself under a life-or-death assault by the very ministers who sought to ban Sami, is folding and upholding the ban - but not even having the guts to issue a verdict: they're actually asking! Sami! to withdraw! and save them the blame! Beneath contempt.

The emerging theme of Israel's most pivotal election in a generation is less nationalist mastery than liberal cowardice. We're here bc Yair Golan's Democrats, fearing hypothetical electoral backlash, voted to ban Sami (predictably, this provoked actual backlash, losing them a seat in the polls).

🚨 BREAKING: Israel's Supreme Court effectively upholds ban on Balad leader Sami Abu Shehade. "Effectively", because his team was just told there's a majority among Justices to uphold the ban, but would he consider just withdrawing his candidacy so that they wouldn't have to.

This is a very interesting new resource, The Register of British Slave-Traders. 'The Register focusses on the individuals who sought to profit from the enslavement of over 3 million African men, women, and children, whose identity was – for the most part – erased from the historical record.' 🗃️

The Register of British Slave-traders compiles and presents information on all known slave-traders in Britain who invested in the trafficking of captive Africans from 1563 to 1807.

Always had Sheeran down as a gifted songwriter who is trying real hard to keep his public persona apolitical - but this isn't neutrality. It's a political stance as unequivocal as Macklemore's, except Ed doesn't appear to have the guts to articulate it out loud.

This is it. If Burnham’s Labour doesn’t stop the ongoing assault on migrants/asylum seekers/refugees and trans people, the far right will not be defeated. Keeping Mahmood is insulting.

Listen, I agree there’s loads of good signs re Burnham, but taking a firm pro-immigration stance should be a basic requirement for an ostensibly progressive politician. And sorry for being biased here as an immigrant myself. Mahmood made me want to leave the UK and keeping her is incredibly hurtful.

Worth adding some numbers to this. The British press decided to make trans rights into an issue. It just wasn’t an issue before. This was a top-down decision. shado-mag.com/articles/opi...
Two striking statistics come to mind.
The first is how the British media decided to obsess over trans people. This is very clear.
Between 2012 and 2022 alone, trans-related articles went from just 60 to over 7,500. By 2022, there were at least 125 times more articles on trans people than in 2012. This has facilitated the rise of a far right narrative vis-a-vis "gender ideology" which is talked about in civilisational terms: In effect, trans people are being portrayed not as individuals but as the products of an ideology that threatens the dominance of 'man' and perceived traditional gender roles.
Fast forward just three years and we see the Daily Mail actively investigate whether any of Tyler Robinson's neighbours or roommates were trans, which would apparently help explain why he shot the white supremacist and Christian nationalist Charlie Kirk.

Mainstream politicos use "genuine concerns" and "legitimate concerns" interchangeably. They aren't. "Genuine concern" = we believe people are sincerely anxious or angry. "Legitimate concern" = we signal we think being discomfited by a neighbour's skin colour is ok. Sure we want to signal the latter?

And as communities there embark on vast and complex conversations about a shared future, some speak not of a United Ireland, but of a New Ireland, an Ireland for all: explicating and enshrining community rights as well as individual ones. Perhaps us over in England should take note.

But all that said, there is vastly more positive experience to learn from Northern Ireland than the negative. Its is a vast repository of peacework in the best sense - not pacification, but a constructive, non-sectarian pursuit of equity, justice and belonging.

My guess is yes - and even without direct communication, fear and violence are mimetic. I'll be very, very surprised if we don't see arson and intimidation of the Belfast kind replicated in England (indeed, anecdotal reports re doorstep threats are already cropping up.)
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
will we see some engagement and crosspolination there, as well? And separately: are there idiots in England closely watching eejits of their own age lobbing molotov cocktails through the houses of non-white families - and taking notes? Are they chatting on Telegram and Signal?
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
and not just in Glasgow, which was always very closely connected to Northern Ireland; but in England, too. Loyalist culture offers an entire cultural community embodying the kind of imperial nostalgia manifested in individual English tweeded twats cosplaying during recent riots

Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
9. And finally: What does this mean for Britishness and English nationalism? One of the ironies of unionism and loyalism is that for decades now, it's been a one-sided love affair. But last week saw, for the first time in decades, riots in Belfast trigger unrest in 'mainland' UK -
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
a dangerous distraction, further eroding legitimacy of dialogue w loyalist groups (+possibly unionist reps & even communities). In turn, this might foster a dangerous temptation to override their anxieties and concerns, which would place a time bomb under the reunified Ireland.
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
need to force it too hard, either - there is growing understanding that the Republic itself will need to change to constructively absorb the north; we may be looking at a consociational system across the entire island. In this context, anti-immigrant protests may be, in addition to their direct harm
120
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
This means that by threading the needle between abstaining from lethal violence (lest they use legitimacy) and reminding of the violent potential (lest they are taken for granted), loyalists have significant leverage over the referendum and its implementation. They won't...
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
that it's not merely a "win" but a sustainable, constructive transition is to bring the unionist and, yes, loyalist community on board. In ROI meanwhile, there is broad support for reunification in principle or in abstract, but concern, among other things, re loyalist violence.

Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
8. What does this mean for the referendum? It's very probable we will have the Border Poll on the reunification of Ireland sometime in the next 10 years. The conversations are only just beginning in earnest; the more pragmatic Republicans know the best way to ensure...
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
7. What does this mean for nationalists? The nationalist community in NI is not immune to racism, esp w the far right busily poisoning the water down South; the Republic has already seen many more arson attacks than the UK, and the same bigotry can be draped in tricolour as in the union jack.
120
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
My guess for the former is, maybe (heard rumours that some bigots who filmed themselves freelancing received v unpleasant visits over the past few days.) For the latter, not sure. The scope for old school loyalist violence by the old school people is narrowing.
121
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
This matters deeply: peace operates, in part, thru historic violent actors coming to an accord with the state and with the communities. Are they still in control? Can they still enforce discipline: would they beat a freelance arsonist, or torch a shop that disobeys their curfew?
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
6. And who ran the violence and logistics? Was it really kids under the direction of gruff older men barking orders? Is a new, small but active Loyalist grouping emerging, in the Russian Doll tradition of paramilitarism? Are they Eloned lone wolves? Or agents of British fash?
110
Dimi Reider @dimireider.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
5. And as for the traditional ones. What does this week mean for Loyalism? Who was in control? Were the big traditional Loyalist paramilitary groups instigating, or tolerating, or merely trying to keep a lid on things? Were they upping their leverage or trying to rescue it?
110
