Asteroid mission for @singularityg3.bsky.social ’s art challenge idea
Three illustrations:
-a rocket taking off at night with an orbiter strapped to the side
-the orbiter deploying a probe in orbit around the planet during an orbital sunrise. The probe’s radiators are unfurling as it floats away from the orbiter
-The probe arrives at its target asteroid, radiators glowing from heat slightly.

Due to crew shortages, which have been credited to an apparent engineer sick-out, multiple Washington State Ferries routes are not operating this morning including Seattle-Bainbridge and Seattle-Vashon Island. Others are on severely reduced schedules. Check for updates: wsdot.com/ferries/sche...

Hey so it's been two years since Eggbug went read-only. What are some lessons we learned about race demographics, moderation and financials? What's the current social media landscape like? Fun thing to be writing about the day I found out the head of trust and safety on bluesky has blocked me lmfao

Beautiful view from Mt. Erie today!
A picture of a panoramic vista on a sunny day. Fog blankets the hills below. Up close, trees frame the scene. The ground is rocky, lumpy but polished smooth by glacial action.

The issue is that people are more sensitive to chance of getting caught vs. severity of punishment so basically guaranteeing most get off light could work worse than uniform (I.e. income based, speed cameras, etc.) type punishments. Carpool lane lottery would be very funny though!

Quick addition: the Vancouver Skytrain is mostly elevated and passes through a lot of high rise areas with few issues, as a more modern example (I forget if that's mentioned in the article but there's a couple other examples)

The NYC El tracks are much larger and louder than a modern elevated rail track, it's not really comparable. We're talking about something more like the monorail in terms of impacts (although a bit bigger). Plus fast access to the light rail is very desirable now!

🧪⚒️ Interesting: modelling of length of day changes suggests that primary coupling between core and mantle is mainly a gravitational torque (dense bits of core and mantle attracting each other) rather than mechanical drag at core-mantle boundary or interaction with geomagnetic field.

So legally the passenger trains have priority but -they made the freight trains too long to fit into sidings so they can't pull over -if a pax train gets delayed they no longer get any priority so they can be delayed even more (On top of disinvestment in the system as a whole) It's not great!

My usual route is 1/2 line to Lynnwood, hop the 117 bus, ferry, then catch island transit at Clinton. If the sounder is running that can be faster but regardless it's a bit of a haul! Definitely day trippable but you gotta pay attention to the last bus times haha

For now, here's a fun doodle I did awhile back, depicting an interpretation of a spurious moon of Venus, Neith, which was once reported by astronomers way back in the 17th century. Obviously, it is well known today that Venus does not actually have any natural satellites. Still fun to draw!
A large, bright crescent shaped moon, with a white-grey coloration and shaded craters, hangs behind a tan-brown anvil cloud in a blue-green sky. Purple and blue bolts of lightning pierce through the clouds.

Yeah I'm trying to think of the first time I actually heard it because I also lived through the film-digital transition but it's more likely I encountered it around 2009/10ish when I got my own dslr and started getting really into camera reviews.

I don't really like or use the word either but it definitely dates to the time period. It was a lot less common than "digital camera" (or eventually just "camera" post-film lol) though for sure
A graph of Google search trends for the term "digicam" in the US from 2005-present. The graph starts around 60 relative units, then after a few spikes drops close to 0 by 2015. After 2023ish it gradually rises to around 10, a noticeable increase but still far below the previous peak.

Version two of Kamo'oalewa. I feel very confident in these orientations and the overall shape. Some features could definitely be better matched but I'm pretty satisfied with this model. I'll be curious to see how well the unseen portions of the model match reality if/when more imagery is released.

After some experimentation in blender, I think I've managed to create a rough 3D model of asteroid Kamo'oalewa based on released photos from China's Tianwen-2 spacecraft (courtesy of @chinaspace.bsky.social). My solution isn't perfect yet, but it accounts for all the angles we've seen so far!

Starting to get the hang of the line camera, also got the python API to output sequential images and auto-stitch them into arbitrarily large pictures
A black and white image of a car taken by a line camera. Unlike a regular camera the horizontal axis represents time instead of space. The unchanging background appears as a series of streaks, a slow moving person pushing a stroller appears distorted and stretched, and a car appears relatively normal.A photograph of a small black industrial line camera with the lens off exposing the strip of pixels. The camera is roughly cubical and dotted with screw holes for mounting.
