I remember hearing that the elevated (ELs) in NYC relegated the streets they were on to second class status and the value of properties was depressed. I'm sure this negative perception is the reason it hasn't been seriously considered for downtown Seattle

The NYC El tracks are much larger and louder than a modern elevated rail track, it's not really comparable. We're talking about something more like the monorail in terms of impacts (although a bit bigger). Plus fast access to the light rail is very desirable now!

Quick addition: the Vancouver Skytrain is mostly elevated and passes through a lot of high rise areas with few issues, as a more modern example (I forget if that's mentioned in the article but there's a couple other examples)
