Asteroid mission for @singularityg3.bsky.social ’s art challenge idea
Three illustrations:
-a rocket taking off at night with an orbiter strapped to the side
-the orbiter deploying a probe in orbit around the planet during an orbital sunrise. The probe’s radiators are unfurling as it floats away from the orbiter
-The probe arrives at its target asteroid, radiators glowing from heat slightly.

Somewhere in a distant planetary system, some civilization decided "the moon next to the one we live on looks pretty comfortable, maybe we should check it out?" For the most part they were correct, though their rover didn't last nearly as long as they hoped. "Meteorological malfunctions" they said.
A blue gas giant hangs in the sky above a colorful landscape, purple-red mountains in the distance tower over a terrain awashed by various sandy and dull green hues. A snaking trail in the dirt extends off towards the horizon, with a small rover wrapped in golden foil overturned on its bank. Following the trail leads the the base of a tornado, wrapped in a debris cloud. The funnel twists up into a stormy sky of heavy, chaotic clouds.

Moons drifting across the face of their parent gas giant, as planet-scale storms roar in the clouds below. This is an older one.
A narrow perspective of a ruddy brown gas giant, a small part of which fills the entire frame. Wavy cloud patterns shift and warp around two large white oval-shaped storms, with host whispy internal spiraling patterns. One storm is center frame, and the other is a only visible as a quarter segment seen in the lower right corner. Two dark shadows fall just to the left and top of the central storm, which are shadows corresponding to two moons in the left of the frame. One moon is grey with a series of dark rifts across its surface, the other is a bright white, with blue grooves and a yellowish crater on its terminator.

This is one of my favorite things I've ever made. I really wanted to make something that conveyed the scale of a supermassive black hole and the disks that surround them.
A giant swirling cloud of material spirals in space. The cloud flattens out into a hot flat blue-white disk at the center, but the gradient goes from white, orange, pink, and then green-brown as it rises over the cloudy toroidal disk. Stars are embedded into the disk, and a pair of freefloating ringed exoplanets floats together in the foreground.

The artist signature says Wolf because I use that moniker as an artist handle, and it has a deer hoof because deer are awesome.

For now, here's a fun doodle I did awhile back, depicting an interpretation of a spurious moon of Venus, Neith, which was once reported by astronomers way back in the 17th century. Obviously, it is well known today that Venus does not actually have any natural satellites. Still fun to draw!
A large, bright crescent shaped moon, with a white-grey coloration and shaded craters, hangs behind a tan-brown anvil cloud in a blue-green sky. Purple and blue bolts of lightning pierce through the clouds.

Version two of Kamo'oalewa. I feel very confident in these orientations and the overall shape. Some features could definitely be better matched but I'm pretty satisfied with this model. I'll be curious to see how well the unseen portions of the model match reality if/when more imagery is released.

My portrayal of the Partial Lunar Eclipse of August 27-28, 2026. These were painted in Photoshop based on my observations through a 10 inch telescope and binoculars. Among the variable clouds I saw just enough of the event to get the observation I wanted, a look at the colors in the Earth shadow.
My setup for these events has been similar for 40 years. I have a stack of printed Moon images on a clipboard, little lights clipped on tripods and on me, and things arranged so only modest motions are needed for me to observe through the telescope and through the binoculars to get complimentary impressions of the colors. The telescope gives a detailed survey of the color differences in various parts of the Moon, The binoculars give an overall color summary and tend to show more saturated color. One then the other are peered through, and once in a while a photo is made with my still camera nearby kept aimed at the Moon. The photos are modest but provide tonal details in the shadows that supplement the sketches with low res but objective references.
During this event I am furiously sketching atop the printed Full Moon image sheets, scribbling outlines of perceived color zones and writing color description labels. These labeled 'color by number' summaries are supplemented with sketches of the overall tonal values across the Moon, done on small printed circles provided for this purpose next to the larger printed maps. The time each sketch is made is always written next to it. All during the observing session I have a small portable shortwave radio tuned to WWV, with its eternal ticking off of the seconds and the voice of the Digital Time God. There I am alone in the night, just me and the rare event.

The nominal shadow colors were seen, with the outermost zone adjacent to the Sunlit area a neutral gray, and smaller concentric zones of subdued golden, then orange surrounding the very dark rusty brick red, 'core'. The entire color range was seen on this occasion. I then reduced my sketches and visual memory into a pictorial summary. It is vital to do the balance of such work immediately afterwards while the visual impression is fresh on ones mind. The digital paintings were done on top of a digital Full Moon photo I obtained immediately after the Eclipse ended.

A New Look at Vulcan A (fictional) NASA infographic about Vulcan, the closest planet to the Sun.
A fake NASA infographic of a fictional planet, Vulcan. The planet is a reddish brown, marked with many small craters and a few dark lava basins. Text on the infographic explains the planet. It reads: A New Look at Vulcan. The Solar System's innermost planet has historically been out of reach of most telescopes, due to its small size and the glare of the nearby Sun. Although the Mariner 10 spacecraft passed within 10,000 miles of this hot, rocky world, its instruments were damaged by sunlight, and no photos could be returned. Now, thanks to NASA's VERIFY mission, the face of this mysterious world is finally coming into focus. Size comparison text: Vulcan is about 60% the size of Mercury, smaller than even the Earth's Moon. Globe text: This virtual globe of Vulcan's surface was made using digital processing of ground-based imagery. Label text: Bright rayed ejecta; ancient impact basin; basaltic lava plains; heavily cratered surface.

When the Viking landing sites were well photographed, maps of the surroundings could be compiled. I made a grayscale overview based on comparisons between the two camera panoramas, and with reference to sample field maps. A color oil painting of the lander was then done incorporating such work.
This vertical view of the Viking 1 landing site is based on the surface panoramas, extrapolated from the cameras views, seeking to place the featured in reasonably proper relative distances from the lander. Such work was of course drafted and executed by hand.

After the Viking mission two large format NASA Special Publications were especially valuable in later efforts to portray the Viking landing sites in Perspective. First, of course, was NASA SP-425 The Martian Landscape' with beautiful large reproductions of earlier Viking photos, and NASA CR-3568 'The Viking Lander Atlas of Mars' which displayed the derived locations of landscape features in 3D space, plotted in contour lines defined by the perspective of the two cameras.
This is a low resolution view of an artwork done in an odd art medium, scratchboard with a gray dot screen printed on it as a basis for making white or inked marks. Several sheets of this were given to me in the 70s by Chesley Bonestell, encouraging me to play with them. He said they were old, so that could mean WW II or so. I used all but one for such Planetary work. I did maps with them of the sites of Vikings 1 & 2, Venera 9, and Venera 10. All those were published in Sky & Telescope magazine, and in their volume 'The New Solar System', which used my art through out the book. I also made an overview of where they thought Viking 1 was, which turned out to be incorrect.

An unfinished one of the Lunar Orientale basin awaits completion, at the time I started it the Western portions of that basin were still poorly photographed and my drawing was going to be an improvement in the available imagery. Now it is quite well known so there is less incentive to finish it.
#Sciart Viking 1 on Mars. This oil on illustration board painting incorporated my efforts to plot the lander surroundings in perspective, and of course knowledge of the final actual lander appearance. The nearest footpad is entirely buried in the powdery dust, a sight which would have certainly been alarming if that had happened to the footpad seen in the first photo! The large rock in the right foreground was nicknamed 'Big Joe'. Just to the right of the lander along the horizon is the upraised rim of a distant impact crater.

The overall color of the scenery reflects mostly influence from initial contemporary sources. National Geographic published a Viking article which featured the kind of independent first class photo work they used to be known for in the early space age. Their color chart driven version of the Martian scenery tended toward the brick red, reasonably approximating the hues as if lit by a noon time Sun in a Terrestrial sky. This painting was initially done in a similar color balance to what they mostly used, then later I learned of the ambient sky etc contributions and overpainted the scene with an orange tan layer. The result color wise is something in between what it was and what it should be, but the scenery remains valid. The Martian sky was based on Viking camera images, whose truncated brightness near the top of the frame complicated portraying the actual sky brightness range.

Here are 6 views of the surface of Mars obtained by landers and rovers. Each use a different camera system and show variations in how they handle the colors of the scenery and dusty sky. Some day someone may stand on Mars and have their own visual impression and be able to adjust photos accordingly.
This is a collection of color photos from the surface of Mars. Each show the scenery and sky as rendered by different types of cameras. This introduces differences in color etc that show more of the varying camera characteristics than of any actual major differences in the colors seen. I think the sky would look pretty much the same from all locations, with the dusty surface showing a fairly limited palette with bare gray basaltic rocks here and there being the main variance from that.

To prepare this I have taken care not to alter the colors of the original releases, in some cases I have adjusted the overall brightness of individual images for better visual match between them.

Upper left: The view from the Opportunity Rover, from the ASU PANCAM website.

Upper middle: the initial panorama from the Pathfinder lander.

Upper right: The Insight lander's view.

Lower left: The Curiosity rover initial view of the surroundings.

Bottom center: A ground level video camera dropped by China's Zhurong rover

Bottom right: A view of the scene and sky from China's Zhurong rover.

Which one renders the sky best? My vote is for the Lower left Mastcam photo, if an identical camera was taken to all the sites the sky should be the similar, with variations in regional airborne dust the main variable. Higher above the horizon than is usually photographed the sky is darker and we are seeing through less airborne dust, but even at the zenith the sky is as best a gray color and far brighter than what an Earthly stratosphere analog would suggest.
