What’s the most valuable skill for talking persuasively about climate change and helping stimulate people into action? It’s not the ability to debate or remember statistics. In fact it's got nothing to do with science at all I think it’s listening 🧵

I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥 There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️ They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬 Thread:🧵Plz RT

I preferred it when Prime Ministers believed things like every person deserved “someone to love, somewhere to live, something to do, and something to hope for”, and acted on those beliefs.

You know I watched this in fascination because I actually didn't know what Daniel Day Lewis sounds like. He's always so intensely doing accents & different characters that I legit had no idea what he spoke like.

At a candidates meeting last week an older male candidate said that the way to improve well-being of workers is to encourage investment so that the wealth trickled down. Aaron stood up & said he'd like to acknowledge the myth of trickle down economics & the crowd cheered. This is the way ☑️ #whakatu

My job as a professor is not to create a serviceable worker. My job is to help foster thoughtful citizens or community members. If that sounds fanciful it’s bc corporate interests have spent decades framing how we talk about education so they don’t take the heat for immiserating labor conditions.

Some wholesome Sunday content for you - while I’ve been housebound and spending a lot of time on the couch I’ve been painting rocks for hiding in parks and today I got a chance to release some into the world for others to find & rehide.
Ten smooth river pebbles with painted designs on them, on a wooden bench. Designs include a hot air balloon, spaghetti, rainbow fish, a progress pride rainbow heart, a smiling sun, multi coloured little hearts. Wooden stump with rock in the middle, painted with “please bring back Snifters” and a drawing of Snifters in the middle.Snakes & Ladders playground.

Photo of the Day. Israel threatened reprisals if the press filmed Gaza from above during airdrops. This is why. A scene of destroyed & burnt out buildings in what is left of Gaza City, the pre-war home to 800,000 people. Credit to Post photographer Heidi Levine who defied the ban & took this.
From above everything looks grey or black. Smoke is seen rising from building ga at the top of the photo. In the foreground many buildings have collapsed entirely. Photo credit to Heidi Levine taken for the Washington Post.

So it turns out that the 'fast-track' to getting projects consented isn't so fast after all. This is backed up by a planner I know who's been working flat out on a fast track application for months & reckons it would have been consented by now under the usual RMA process. #nzpol

A very good long piece on AoNZ & climate which details why (among other things) the oil & gas reversal is utterly batshit on so many levels including economic ones. As these decisions become more obviously irrational, the justifications are becoming equally insane. drilled.media/news/new-zea...
