Ley: Every time I hear Jim Chalmers talk about productivity, I think it took him three years to even mention productivity. I sat through budget speeches where the word productivity was not mentioned. Budget speech March 2025:
A more productive, more dynamic economy
A big part of this depends on boosting productivity the right way, to lift living standards over the long term.

Our plan for productivity growth doesn’t mean making Australians work longer for less.

It’s about investing in our people and doing more to unlock our potential by boosting dynamism and competition.

We’ve created a $900 million fund to reward state governments for implementing reforms that promote competition.

Tonight, we are advancing this substantial reform agenda.

We will abolish non‑compete clauses for most workers.

Non‑competes are holding too many Australians back from switching to better, higher‑paying jobs.

More than 3 million Australians are captured by these clauses, including childcare workers, construction workers and hairdressers.

People shouldn’t need to hire a lawyer to take the next step in their career.

Or permission from their old boss if they want to be their own boss, and turn an idea into a small business.

Sussan Ley says she doesn’t believe anyone in her position (LOTO) has the resolve she has to increase the number of women in the Liberal Party. She’s so resolved, she has no plan and is completely agnostic about how it should happen.

Broadly agree - except when it devolves to banning ABC journalists from being active in their neighbourhoods on various issues. Ie: Signing petitions...a direction given not long ago by management Neutered from community engagement as a condition to work for the ABC is just not worth it.

Just for O.S. friends - the Australian Prime Minister does NOT have the power to pardon anyone This power is reserved for the Crown - for a miscarriage of justice. AND the Royal prerogative of mercy does not overturn a conviction. Your system of government is cooked You might want to look at that

Enjoying how the AFR says you can't tax unrealised capital gains in super balances over $3m because it is not real money, and yet boasts about all the unrealised gains of the richest 200

Miranda Stewart knows more about tax than the combination of all economists and columnists who have written about it in the AFR. Not surprisingly, she is also much more sensible than all those wannabe experts who have criticised the changes afr.com/policy/tax-a...

Let’s just relax and pass the fair and affordable super tax
Even if you have to pay the tax, your comfortable retirement is safe, and you are still getting the benefit of tax concessions.

This is getting a bit sad now. AFR clutching at very thin straws Reminder, currently 80,000 people are affected. One estimate is that just 3.5% of all people currently employed would be affected in the future (if the threshold doesn't change for 30 years)

AFR column on how "bad" the changes to super tax weirdly explains that the changes won't affect pretty much everyone.(except the super rich) Got your super in an industry or retail fund? (ie all of us). You're fine, you don't have "unrealised capital gains" so carry on.
If their superannuation is in an industry or a retail fund, they don’t really have a reason to worry either. That’s because those funds don’t tend to sit on unrealised gains.

The same is true of wealthy family offices and self-managed superannuation funds with good advisers. They might regularly rebalance their portfolios or adopt any number of sophisticated strategies to prepare for and deal with the new tax.
