New reporting by Fortune revealed the disastrous results of Shopify's all-out scramble to embrace Al nearly a year ago. After telling workers that using Al tools is a "baseline expectation" in the workplace, Lütke is now changing his tune as workers spew out Al-generated emails, memos, and code without double-checking it beforehand.
"We call those 'slop grenades' that people toss at each other," Lütke said in an interview on the Knowledge Project podcast. "That's definitely a bad thing.*

Today's Zealandia walk! The first photo is a native tree fuschia, and you can see from the next 2 photos birds go wild for them. Tui has the violet pollen on its face, kaka is nibbling at a flower. (My fave shot in this lot is actually the Pāpango; I love the composition (if I do say so myself))

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.

How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around) – AHA
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words.

Preparing for a workshop on teaching critical thinking in STEM in light of current, let's say pressures, and decided I should start my talk with a slides that lays out the values that form my premises:
Slide header: Premises/values: Cards on the table

Bullet points:
* I care more about students’ learning than about the “accuracy” of grades or the prestige associated with a specific degree
* I want to work collaboratively with my students, rather than policing them
* I don’t want to spend any time reading, much less providing feedback on, something nobody wrote
* Science is a human, communal process; there is no knowing without knowers; and our work cannot be autocompleted
* Deep thinking and human connection are always more important than polish, speed, or “productivity”
* Research agendas should not be set by & for industry

I think they write such things because it's what they believe. People, including journos, steeped in neoliberal lore, are semi-secretly terrified of the big changes that are likely to occur over the next 30+ years. Chloe and her peeps are activated by it and offering ways forward.

It was unavoidable that this week I'd end up writing about Apple's latest blunder. But in the context of Figma's Sites bullshit and Shopify recasting designers as "artists" it's even worse than one OS making a stupid decision. The mission of UX is being changed: from making shit work, into branding

Apple's Liquid Glass is a grim portent for UX
Industry leaders like Apple and Shopify are redefining design excellence from making products usable to solely luxury branding.

This does explain some of the thinking at the time – thinking by 1980s Labour leaders who were a) into University of Chicago economics, b) made neo-liberal policies law in the 1980s, and c) left Labour and created the Act party. I'm hopeful left-wing political thought in NZ has come a ways since
