IIRC, the nightingale hospitals were massively underused and ultimately deemed a misuse of resources. Isn’t there a risk the same would be true for nightingale data centres? If we are arguing that sophisticated open source models will be a thing, does adding compute really reduce cybersecurity risk?

A very selfish point from the diaspora - the tech industry (esp. companies leveraging various facets of AI/optimisation/machine learning) crave STEM PhDs and postdocs. We are hiring like mad and have had enormous success hiring recent science grads/postgrads regardless of their specialism.
