#Scotstober2026 Missing @drmdempster.bsky.social Each day in October has a Scots word for you to make a poem, a story, a picture, a joke, anything! On Halloween we use 1 of the Scots words for turnip/swede (the traditional item to make a spooky lantern with). Use the hashtag & please share!

Spent a lovely afternoon in the fab @orkneylibrary.bsky.social #Archives this afternoon trawling a few more records for #PlaceNames! Today's focus was #Stronsay with names from a manuscript map and a poor distribution list! Love the drawing of the house of Huip! #Orkney
Collage of three photos of documents. One shows a little drawing of a house called Huip, another is titled 'Return for Stronsay Distribution 3rd June 1837, the last lists some of the places in the list.

The Hole Stone (or Crow Stone) in Galloway. Local tradition says that it was used during marriage ceremomies, by joining hands through the hole. It stands close to the White Cairn and another stone reputedly once accompanied it. #Scotland #History #StandingStoneSunday
Moody black and white photo of a standing stone in a grassy field. The stone is pierced by a hole, about one third of the way from the top. The sky is cloudy but light is breaking to the right.

🧵 A reminder #OTD that 'Hardrada' makes no sense in any language. The Norwegian king who died at Stamford Bridge in #1066 was called Haraldr harðráði in Old Norse. Such bynames or nicknames can (and should) usually be translated. His means something like 'Hard Ruler' or 'Stern Ruler'.

Hutututu Old Norse interjection meaning 'so cold!' Still lives on in Norwegian "huttetu", which may have a slightly broader meaning. Not that I propose to read this inscription as "all this silver gives me the chills", or anything, but I'm just putting it out there.

Looking up the steps from the bottom of the enigmatic and deeply unsettling ancient underground chamber of Mine Howe, at Tankerness on Orkney's East Mainland, when it was still open to visitors. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #MineHowe #Tankerness #Orkney #EastMainland
Mine Howe. The image shows a rather disorienting view up a set of honey-coloured stone steps within a stone chamber. These seem to climb to a landing and then continue to the right. There is a curving handrail on the right, with lighting attached to it. Most of the light comes from the flash on the camera and this makes the stone seem wet.

The impressive Drumtroddan Standing Stones, before the nearest to the camera fell over. They enjoy a magnificent location with distant views, some two miles inland from Port William in Dumfries & Galloway. The tallest is some 10ft in height. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland
Drumtroddan Standing Stones. The image shows a rough grassy field with a stone wall in the background and distant views beyond that. On the left of the image is a large standing stone covered in lichen and there is another standing stone, a little more distant, on the right of the frame. A third stone is lying on the ground in the bottom middle of the frame. The scene is in sunlight.

…I’ve seen the arc of the earth, From the Birsay shore, like the edge of a planet, And the lifeboat plunge through the Pentland Firth To a cosmic tide with the men that man it. —Robert Rendall, “Angle of Vision” from The Edinburgh Book of Twentieth-Century Scottish Poetry (EUP, 2005) #RNLI #poem
Angle of Vision
Robert Rendall

But, John, have you seen the world, said he,
Trains and tramcars and sixty-seaters,
Cities in lands across the sea –
Giotto’s tower and the dome of St Peter’s?

No, but I’ve seen the arc of the earth,
From the Birsay shore, like the edge of a planet,
And the lifeboat plunge through the Pentland Firth
To a cosmic tide with the men that man it.
