Ludographies man. Love them. @dgivaca.bsky.social just reminded me that The Dreadful Secrets of Candlewick Manor had emergent mystery mechanics back in 2008! Re-reading, they seemed strikingly similar to modern mechanics. And lo, Apocalypse by Moonlight (the root of CfB) specifically calls it out!

It's definitely in the top 5 of games I've GMed most often, but unfortunately, besides the intro adventure for Candlewick (which is a really good beginner-friendly one-shot for MaOCT), I haven't had much opportunity to do anything with Candlewick specifically :/

One of many reasons why I believe Monsters and Other Childish Things remains an underlooked game. Particularly with the new framework and mechanics developed for the supplement mentioned below, it's quite an experimental indie ttrpg in a trad-game disguise.

This is why I love when a game designer provides a list of inspiration sources in their games, not only in the way of ttrpgs, but also other media (books, movies, etc.) - it has occasionally lead me to find really interesting while niche things, or draw unexpected connections between games.
