jess is right! it’s worse than ever for women in this field, and it was still pretty bad at our peak. im one of the lucky freelancers who has regular work (probably work more than i did at polygon!), and it’s still not a livable amount of pay. it’s pushing important and skilled women out.

In June a game designer initiated a legal complaint against Dungeons & Dragons, alleging (in a series of logical long leaps) that they stole his monster. But what does it mean to own a game, and what happens when assets are more valuable than experiences?

The new zines are gorgeous (thanks, @heartofthedeernicorn.com!), and you absolutely should snag one for yourself. Also, I'll be handing these extras out at conventions over the next year. So, if you run into me and remember to ask perhaps I'll gift one!

Neither Wargamer nor EN World received preview details about the World of Warcraft D&D book. Instead, everything is being filtered through YouTube influencers and WotC's Dungeon Masters AP series. Covering previews is dubious work anyhow, but journalists were seemingly left out of the first push.

This book was a genuine delight. Brutal and mean and filled with moments of barely-revealed tenderness that belies the fact that Astarion is an absolute bastard. Kingfisher captures Astarion's voice so perfectly it was like I had Neil Newbon speaking in my ear. A lovely, sad, tragic read.

The Astarion prequel novel comes out next week, and I got a chance to sit down with @tkingfisher.com to chat about the book, Baldur's Gate 3, working within a massive IP, and how she balanced comedy, tragedy, and whimsy. Also paladins. So... so many paladins.

T. Kingfisher’s Astarion is hilarious, heartbreaking, and utterly tragic
The book perfectly captures Astarion’s voice, and refuses to talk down to the audience through trauma, pain, and the small light of hope.
