The "Zionism is racism" motion, to be debated at the Green Party conference tomorrow, will not advance the Palestinian cause one inch. But, if adopted, it would marginalise and discredit the party. There are powerful ways to confront the genocide. Toxic gesture politics isn't one of them.

I don't see why voting for different parties on different ballot papers is somehow "wrong". I am sure some people do indeed vote for one party on the constituency ballot paper (which is decided on FPTP) and a different party on the London-wide ballot paper (party lists using D'Hondt for AMS)

Amongst other things this motion sets up an impossible "purity test" for Jewish members, and contradicts the long-established principle of non-violence. I have left the Green Party after more than a decade of active membership because this motion should never have been allowed to come forward.

There are already working PR systems in use in the UK, for example, for the London Assembly or the Welsh Senedd. Both systems have a "constituency" element. All this faffing about as if PR was something entirely new that needed to be researched and tested is just avoidance behaviour.

In order to ensure that "regulations, price controls and service standards are maintained" you need regulators that can impose meaningful penalties, and several armies of inspectors. Just look at the UKs water companies. The only one that isn't a disaster is the one in public ownership.

The inescapable fact is that once you introduce private enterprise into a public service the costs go up and the quality of service goes down. I can't think of an example where this hasn't happened.
