Like, and I realize this example is absurd, but hear me out. There's a good argument that, without knowing anything else about their careers, you take a look at MJ standing next to his in-universe friend Stan Podolak and judge that the latter might be better at music, simply because Wayne shorter.

Hell, it could be Tweety. Could be Bugs. Could be Lola. Could be the Tasmanian Devil. Hell, it could be the actor who played Newman! No way to judge that by height. Heck, it could even cut the other way. Guys who aren't as tall, so couldn't play ball, but still had to make their own path in life

IMO you just can't apply NBA logic to this. Chris Paul is 6'0" so it's likely just from knowing that fact that he's not in the same caliber as Jordan. Unfair, but a cruel reality. Whereas take (ridiculous example) Jordan's team from Space Jam and ask who's the best sax player, it's not clear at all.

Rund’s report said Powers directed a water break roughly 20 minutes into the workout. The players said otherwise: Their only water break came 35 to 45 minutes into the roughly 75-minute workout, after a grueling bear crawl, and lasted just seconds. The only players who got water during the break — about eight — were the first finishers of the drill.

“The first of us to finish had a few seconds at the bottles before being ordered back while others, including Matthew, were still crawling,” players wrote. “This was the only water break.”

The players disputed the Rund report’s claim that Mayich did not struggle until the final exercise, a full-field sprint carrying a medicine ball. Mayich exhibited signs of distress earlier, they said, growing disoriented during the bear crawl and becoming so fatigued he could not carry a teammate during a buddy carry exercise. As Ziesel spoke to players before the medicine ball sprint, Mayich leaned on a teammate in order to stand.

“No one at ASU properly monitored him during the workout and no one intervened,” the players wrote.

Jolene is about the power of a magical entity. Tennessee Waltz is about the power of a magical song. Choosin' Texas exists in a universe where magic has been outlawed in favor of frictionless real-estate preferences, one of which the song devotes its time to unpacking; a list song without a gimmick.

I'm not a hater. It's just inoffensive slop. It's not corrupting the youth or peddling hate. But god the reference to Hank Williams felt like a copy of a copy of a copy of real nostalgia. By contrast, I believe Leonard Cohen heard Hank Williams coughing at the Tower of Song, which is a real place.

Choosin' Texas takes the opposite approach.

Tennessee Waltz works because it musically constructs a love triangle so immaculately that you can imagine her friend and sweetheart instantly bonding over how purty is said waltz. The song audaciously states, then proves, that this gorgeous waltz from Tennessee will literally haunt the listener.

The Joke Calculator @dewno.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The verses mainly exist to add banal, flat references to the differences between Tennessee and Texas. The singer actually literally calls it the Lone Star State. The studio, to judge by the vibes alone, was likely converted from a lab where some type of animal research that is now banned was common.

Like, okay, it's starting to drag here, let's resolve to the fourth and turnaround. The structure feels rote and almost comically uninspired. This song had to exist to make some contract math work out for various stakeholders and every aspect of the production followed from that dismal axiom.

The Joke Calculator @dewno.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It's clever as an idea in the precise way that feels like it was the best song idea from 100 suggestions, and in its execution, it never really got past that phase. Whether a machine was involved is beside the point, given how mechanical and perfunctory the song feels from concept to execution.

Country appreciator here. Choosin' Texas is slop. I don't know or care whether it's AI. I just know that someone along the chain must've said to a human or a robot: "Write a hit song like Tennessee Waltz. Make no mistakes."

No offense, but it kinda sounds like you went up to a group of people, insulted their religious beliefs, and expected them to laugh with you. Like you correctly recognized that they had formed a church, and, instead of respecting it, you were the local reddit theist to the evangelical atheists.

The fruit didn't advertise itself, nor was it advertised by others, as being anything except a persimmon. And it has a right to live. God knows I'm not saying you shouldn't like it, or should let my opinion dissuade you. But I was hoping to discover greatness, and that search will have to wait.

However, you (the guileless novice, here meaning me) buy something in the fruit section at the co-op and you assume that just by showing up and paying fare, you can perhaps sample one of life's delicacies. And your most minimal expectations are rebuffed, and you feel a certain sadness about that.

I don't know anything about this fruit. I'm sure there's some brilliant chefs somewhere in Asia who have figured out how to exploit its properties as a perfect base for a curry. I probably, in short, interfaced badly with this fruit in my attempt to expand my horizons. I fully admit fault if so.

No matter how small I sliced it, it swallowed badly--always just slightly indigestible. No real flavor, just meaty perfunct of texture, coating my teeth with acidic pulp, seeds obsidian chunks that were randomly dispersed throughout the husky interior, dried leaves crowning a tomato-like sheen.

Wow, just had a persimmon. Wow. That was a shockingly unpleasant experience. Goddamn. All of the autumn bother of a pumpkin project with none of the soul or earthy stench, just the astringent vacuousness of a cynical protein bar consumed 3 years after its best-by date.

kudos to macklemore here for —right off the bat— the perspective and acknowledgment of who the real victims are
I'm not sure how to start this. So I'm going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour.

But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious. In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.

The victims are the Palestinian people. The men, women and children who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today, and people will be killed tomorrow. I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don't lose sight of that.

Now, I think it would be another matter entirely if they had already gotten an automatic first down. That's totally different situationally: You have a better field position (with a fallback FG if all else fails), but you can also start winding down the clock.

the defensible reason that conventional wisdom says "always take the points" is because the sport of football is a Rube Goldberg pinball machine and anything and everything can go wrong and the more you've watched the better you understand that. going for it felt too clever in that context
100
The Joke Calculator @dewno.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
In all seriousness, the collapse GB experienced after that probably would've happened anyway. And it's not as simple as "3 pts for certain or 7 with <42% probability". OTOH, "always take the points" is much less cowardly and more defensible as conventional wisdom than punting/prevent defense

The Joke Calculator @dewno.bsky.social · 14/09/2026

love when you get a situation where both players can serve-and-volley. always a delicate balance to get that right (if a player can mostly dominate with their serve, it doesn't happen, see: Shelton's last couple matches or the women's finals), but it's aesthetically-pleasing tennis

it's obviously not a fair comparison (especially because the initial pie is much smaller), but countries that rapidly industrialize frequently see 17% growth or better over the course of 5 years or less. Is the argument that 0.4% median household income growth somehow a laudable achievement?
100
The Joke Calculator @dewno.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
17% over 40 years would be around 0.4% annual growth (which, again, seems to be an underestimate based on what I can tell) during a period where the US completely changed the structure of its economy into modern tech, largely on the promise of (and bipartisan obsession with) economic growth?
000
The Joke Calculator @dewno.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
sorry, i seem to have stepped into a discourse i'm only faintly aware of, what's your point here? anyway, I looked into it and Devereaux's median-household 17% stat for this period seems actually to be an underestimate of true median growth, though it absolutely would be underwhelming for 40 years.
