I decided to get a burner Facebook (many of my community's activities are communicated only on that platform). It's been over a decade since I had one, but I did not anticipate this degree of nightmare: to verify your account, they want to video your face.
screenshot of a notification box that reads "Confirm your identity with a video selfie. To make sure you're a real person, we need you to record a video selfie. We'll ask you to move your head during the recording to help us capture your face at different angles. Continue"

THIS. I am lucky enough to have a session with students on the knowledge economy and while we map the systems, what I'm really doing is making space for them to really see the scale at which they've been betrayed, and then feel their feelings about it.

Sharing this update provided to me directly about the state of NLM and the future of NNLM, traveling exhibits, and, somehow, MedlinePlus. I am so worried for friends and colleagues, and I'm stuck on that, but it is hard to not want to scream WTF about a MedlinePlus with no new material. #medlibs
Screenshot of a DM

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) will undergo a “realignment” effective July 1. With 40% of staff positions eliminated, the remaining staff and services will focus on core library functions, including Collection Development and Health Data Standards (formerly Bibliographic Services). NCBI will continue operations but with reduced staff and services.
Outreach will no longer be considered a core function. The Branch, which oversees NNLM, will be dissolved. NNLM will continue under the Office of Strategic Operations
Traveling Exhibits and History Talks are suspended. Exhibits already on loan or scheduled will proceed, but no new programs or outreach initiatives will be offered.
No new website curations will be created. MedlinePlus will be maintained as needed, but no new content will be developed.

Hi friends! A good friend asked me to share this awesome new project— a literary magazine by trans kids, for trans kids, with a little help from trans adults. If you have a trans kid in your life, definitely check out Chrysalis Magazine! www.chrysalismagazine.org
ANNOUNCING THE LAUNCH OF

Chrysalis

a new literary magazine by trans youth, for trans youth (created with a little help from trans adults)
These days, it feels like we are always hearing about trans kids and teens: Chrysalis was created so that trans, non-binary, intersex, gender-
queer, agender, two-spirit, and gender expansive youth can speak for themselves - and most impor-
tantly, speak to one another.

At Chrysalis, we believe that art, literature, and culture are a key part of trans resistance and resilience for people of all ages. And we know that the creativity, talent, and imagination of trans youth is unparalleled!

Chrysalis exists to give that radiance a platform, and to mentor the next generation of trans writers.

Submit!
We are currently seeking submissions of visual art, poetry, non-fiction and fiction related to our first issue's theme: Strength. You can also submit reporting on local events related to trans youth, and questions for Danny Lavery, our advice columnist! Visit the submissions page of our website for more information: chrysalismagazine.org/submissions
Submissions deadline: June 15, 2025.

Support our Work

Chrysalis is a grassroots initiative: we do not yet have grant funding and or other resources. Your donations help us print the magazine, pay for our website and other subscriptions, and grow our efforts for the future. To support our work, visit chrysalismagazine.org/support-our-work

I need a better strategy to push back against AI boosterism at my U. I'm on all of the committees because of, ironically, my AI libguide. But my Ask Pointed Questions strategy is not slowing the hype machine. Is this when I start Stating Facts?

What backgrounds do people have who are participating in/leading AI education initiatives in health sciences & med schools? My findings this AM: you need a degree in bio/medical or computer sciences to get a foot in this door, and I would dearly like to make a case for a wider door at my U.

Finally put my finger on the weirdness itching me for...years? Higher Ed AI policies are responding to a problem without actually analyzing the problem itself. Or taking a position. From a place of icky tech myth. Thank you to @cjdenial.bsky.social for giving me this thread to pull!

For those who are mad and activated (good) my one hope is that you will look for the people already doing the work. You probably do not need to invent your own new organization or group. Find the people already doing it and join them, listen to them, learn from them.

dear #medlibs, I am struggling to articulate, but, has anyone else noticed the glaring absence of humanism in the whether-to-use-AI clinical decision trees? I feel super weird being the only one in the room being like "What about cultural norms/expectations? Empathy?...No?"

Image is a line graph entitled Number of Annual US Pedestrian Fatalities, 1980-2022. The background is white, the graph line is blue, and the 3 data points are orange. On the left side are deaths starting at 4k & going up by 1k increments to 8k. The bottom of the chart is years, starting with 1980, and going up by 2 yr increments. The first data point on the left is just above the 8k line at 8,070 fatalities. The line drops towards an all-time low in 2010 at 4,302 fatalities. From there it rises steeply to end at 8,126 fatalities for 2022, which has an asterisk noting that it's Projected. Sources listed at the bottom: "FARS and GHSA analysis of SHSO data"
