I'm sort of fascinated by the rhetorical strategy I keep seeing from AI boosters to try to skip past the question of 'Should we?' straight to 'How?' Like I understand why these folk WANT it to be a settled question but like. It simply is not?
Publishers increasingly rely on AI-supported systems to identify image manipulation, plagiarism, paper mill indicators, citation anomalies, and other integrity risks before publication. The STM’s Integrity Hub is one example of how AI-supported integrity screening is already becoming embedded across publishing workflows. From a research integrity perspective, the question is no longer whether AI belongs in scholarly publishing. It already does. The question is how it should be governed.

Okay so I run this service at MPOW where faculty send me their CVs and I check which of their works can legally go on our repository. They get a nice lil report explaining which version of the work is eligible and why and I (ideally) get a bunch of accepted manuscripts in my inbox to deposit.

This course draws from the award-winning book Data Feminism (MIT Press, 2020), challenging students to consider how examining questions of gender, power, and justice can transform the way we visualize data. Drawing from the rich history of feminist activism and critical thought, we will learn to recognize and counter biases in conventional visualization practices while developing skills to create more ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible visualizations of our own. The course brings real-world examples of data visualization in conversation with theoretical frameworks that question whose perspectives are included (or not) in data science and data communication, illustrating the need for approaches that employ visualization to amplify minoritized perspectives and draw attention to issues of equity and justice.

Bringing this back to say I still want to know if the rise of university libraries publishing open ETDs have impacted this trend. Is anyone tracking that btw? Are there good numbers available on how many institutions make a point of posting their ETDs to their repositories?

I've seen a lot of chatter today about Instagram ending support for optional End-to-End Encrypted DMs. I helped to lead on cryptography and privacy for E2EE in Messenger and Instagram for many years, until I left around 10 months ago, so it's disappointing to see it being removed from Instagram.

Student debt is strangling new librarians. The proposed changes will make it worse. The cost of living is out of control and mid-level jobs aren't paying enough for rent, much less entry level. Professional development is expected or required, but must be paid by the worker.

The academics who get it, get it!!
What Was Challenging If I had to sum up all the frustrations withthe pro-ject and why the work ended when the grant fund-ing ended,it would be bureaucracy. There were struggles navigating each university’s procedures and regulations that created frustration and eventu-ally, in many ways, inhibited future collaboration. The firstbarrier, or at least frustration, from the VT and UVM side was the bane of academics-compliance culture. This played out in several dis-tinct ways on thevarious trips when teams from one region visited another. To be clear, compliance regulations have a pur-pose.They exist to prevent fraud and embezzle-ment, for example, and to ensure that taxpayer-funded grant money is spent responsibly. There are places, however, where “one-size-fits-all”rules can at best cost a great deal of time and effort and, worse, disincentivize actions which advance the implicit goals of the collaboration. I will detail the issues below and then discuss a few lessons learned.
