Cannot be emphasised enough that Trump II will plausibly cause the kind of death count we associate with the worst dictatorships of the last century. Unspeakably bad that he came to be president of the world's most powerful nation.

Milwaukee’s political bargain at the heart of hosting the RNC
The RNC is coming soon, many in the city are not thrilled, and economic impact might not meet expectations. But in a way, Milwaukee’s convention-connected political victory has already been won.

Among our new October books is @sarahbrouillette.bsky.social's "Content Machines," which considers how platforms like Wattpad and TikTok have reshaped modern publishing, reading, and writing: buff.ly/bWWE29D
Cover of Content Machines: Reading and Writing in the Platform Era by Sarah Brouillette. The cover is white with a tablet featuring six colorful digitally drawn images of romance book covers. There are blue thumbs ups and red hearts covering the images. Beneath is written, “Reading and Writing in the Platform Era” in bold. Below this, in lighter text, a summary of Content Machines begins. The title is written vertically in the bottom right parallel to the tablet. The author’s name is directly after in a smaller serif font.

My buddy and I were hiking deep in the Glacier NP backcountry when we heard voices coming ahead — kids voices. And they were singing “Have a good nights sleep on us… MATTRESS DISCOUNTERS.” And lo it was my local state rep Spencer Black and kids.

stop treating the culture wars as an exogenous shock. political actors made strategic choices to create and weaponize them. they are not a curious weather condition public schools failed to dress appropriately for.

Also, there’s a weirdly large degree of overlap between the people bemoaning “100 year old” pedagogical techniques and system structures and the people who are like WHY DOES NO ONE TEACH QUINTILIAN ANYMORE?

And this also doesn’t cut cleanly. Like, former teachers will emphasize the importance of getting teachers on board with some reform; and non-teachers who point to unions as a huge impediment seem to me saying the same thing, but it’s a different way of conceiving the obstacle

Oh, I actually did not mean my thing disparagingly, though re-reading it, I can absolutely see how it came off that way. The difference that I see has to do with how FEASIBLE each subgroup thinks a given intervention will be, and where the roadblocks will arise.

I research teachers' work. There is a known gap between public perception and the actual day-to-day experience of teaching that sociologist Dan Lortie poetically described as coming from "the apprenticeship of observation." This imagination/reality gap creates lots of problems in ed policy.

It's difficult to grapple with the cost of material which hinders upgrades and fixes. But in NC it also is infuriating to see that if we had left our state education lottery percentage at 35% as it was required we could have had an additional 5 billion dollars in revenue for infrastructure.

This is the essential core of popularism. Things being exactly the way they are in the present is the only imaginable state of affairs, and that is the lens through which everything gets judged. I was a stay-at-home toddler dad recently, and the idea that this would offer nothing to me is CRAZY

In my ed reform course, I talk about its propensity for grift — structural encouragement to make huge promises about a glorious future and collect massive present financial and social rewards on that basis. Well-meaning reformers might look at the AI hype cycle and be like, oh shit, that’s us.

The thing about SaS's breathless innuendo about the evil publishing company pushing a flawed product, the cultish devotion to a set of scholars invested in a particular way of understanding education, and widespread underdelivering is — that’s just what ed reform looks like. For decades.
