“We are hearing loud and clear that without community buy-in, this plan will lead to enrollment loss…that has been grossly underestimated by district leaders. Until the district has a clear plan to bring families along in the process, school board members must vote to stop the transformation.”

“A Failure in Vision”: Minneapolis Educators Rally Against Proposed School Closures - Workday Magazine
The Minneapolis Public Schools district has proposed closing more than a dozen schools next year to increase enrollment. Union educators and community members are demanding schools stay open.

“I…have since had the time to qualify those feelings with facts that I hope help the public push back on policies that have harmed students, families and communities in the city. MPS has closed schools before, often under the pretense of improving education and budget efficiency.”

The same old song at Minneapolis Public Schools
Closing schools in Minneapolis has increased inequalities, lowered student achievement and come at the expense of participatory democracy.

This is a state law that needs to change ASAP, as it is clearly not serving constituents: “Neither state law nor Minneapolis Public Schools policy sets an attendance requirement for board members, and the district is exempt from a state law allowing boards to remove members for cause.”
