There's this really odd pattern with Bari Weiss, JD Vance, Richard Hanania etc, where they rise to prominence because their main skill is cultivating the friendship of wealthy patrons, but it's impossible to figure out how they do it because they constantly exude a pungent strain of anti-charisma.

A mom watching her kid playing joyfully on a new playground and then saying she’ll vote to destroy it by reopening the highway to cars sounds like satire written by @thewaroncars.bsky.social “Fuck my kid, this would make my once-a-week drive slightly faster” sfstandard.com/2026/10/10/g...
Ryuka's mom, Denise Leo, 50, supports Prop. G because it would restore the road for weekend commutes. She drives Friday mornings for work as a library aide in San Mateo and wants the option of taking the Great Highway, rather than 19th Avenue.
The pathway above the highway always worked when she wanted to go for a run, anyway. Or, wait, does she oppose G?
Told that a "no" vote keeps the road closed to cars, she paused. In 2024, she pointed out, it was the "no" vote that kept the highway open.
"I'm gonna vote to open it," she said, looking at her son. "Even though he likes it."

Fab story from Margaret Hamilton, RIP, showing why Science-Mums are brilliant scientists! When innovating at the cutting edge of technology, it's so important to bring together a wide range of lived experiences. Left text: Did your life as a software engineer and a mother ever collide?
Often in the evening or at weekends I would bring my young daughter, Lauren, into work with me. One day, she was with me when I was doing a simulation of a mission to the moon. She liked to imitate me – playing astronaut. She started hitting keys and all of a sudden, the simulation started. Then she pressed other keys and the simulation crashed. She had selected a program which was supposed to be run prior to launch – when she was already “on the way” to the moon. The computer had so little space, it had wiped the navigation data taking her to the moon. I thought: my God – this could inadvertently happen in a real mission. I suggested a program change to prevent a prelaunch program being selected during flight. But the higher-ups at MIT and Nasa said the astronauts were too well trained to make such a mistake. Midcourse on the very next mission – Apollo 8 – one of the astronauts on board accidentally did exactly what Lauren had done. The Lauren bug! It created much havoc and required the mission to be reconfigured. After that, they let me put the program change in, all right.

I almost never read emails from politicians but i just got one from @ocasio-cortez.house.gov titled "My Thoughts on AI" and it's actually quite good. Relieved to see her diverging from Bernie.
We can stop this, and we shouldn’t play their game. Together we can address both the economic and safety threats of unrestricted AI development and prevent financial chaos and stabilize market risk.

We must make it clear now that should the AI bubble pop, Congress should not bail out Big Tech.

And across our federal agencies, we have the authorities and tools to hold AI companies and their leaders accountable for releasing dangerous, unvetted, and defective products. We must not wait.

Silicon Valley billionaires want us to believe that AI robots will destroy humanity.

But the biggest threat to humanity are the tech oligarchs themselves.

It’s time we hold them accountable.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Denmark just pulled off the diplomatic
heist of the decade. They basically got
Trump to re-sign the 1951 Greenland
agreement, but added a genius "poison

US stays in NATO. Trump gets the
domestic headline, but Denmark quietly
locked them into the European security
architecture. Masterful.
