I have, perhaps inevitably, built a Gaussian assumed-density filter (GADF) to estimate nitrate in my #Aquarium. I initially thought of it as a #KalmanFilter, but parts of the physical and measurement model are non-Gaussian, so GADF is the more accurate […] [Original post on colquitt.xyz]
Home Assistant dashboard showing the aquarium nitrate model over 2–4 October 2026. The blue curve is estimated nitrate concentration with a shaded 95% uncertainty interval; the green curve is estimated net nitrate accumulation rate with its 95% interval. The current summary reports nitrate 7.90 ± 1.74 ppm, net accumulation 2.29 ± 1.32 ppm/week, and tap-water nitrate 4.28 ± 1.51 ppm. The filter has only been running for a few days, so the estimates and uncertainty are still settling.

[Top tip for injured hairy men] If your plaster/bandaid is the sort that's more clothy/fabricy than plasticky/rubbery then rubbing/isopropyl alcohol will wick right through the fabric to the adhesive underneath and dissolve it damn near instantly. Put a dab on your fingers and rub the cloth and […]

Its been like 7 weeks of school and Alex is still reading Catcher in the Rye at school. This is the first book for the class. They are about halfway through. The teacher reads the book to the kids in class. Alex believes this is because a significant fraction of 10th graders can't read at the […]

Born on this day: Gordon Sumner, better known as Sting, transformed from a schoolteacher into a global rock icon. As the lead singer of The Police and a prolific solo artist, the 17-time Grammy winner built a timeless catalog spanning rock, jazz, and worldbeat.
Professional wrestler Steve Borden, performing as Sting in All Elite Wrestling (AEW), speaks into an AEW-branded microphone in a wrestling ring. He wears iconic black-and-white face paint, a scorpion-graphic shirt, and a black jacket. Look some of these are so on the nose but if I didn’t do it, a ton of you guys would post this pic in the comments.

Writing by Hand is Good for your Brain - Here's how to do it
Because I am known to write using a fountain pen on paper, a number of people have pointed me to this post and its underlying research. I won’t rehash what is said in those sources, but the gist of it is that when you write things down by hand you’re recruiting more of your brain, which is a good thing.

see, the reason it's worth learning how the world of geopolitics works, whether or not you like it, is because you find out a significant feature of the global political economy is that water in the US gets wasted on mass producing alfalfa that will then be sent to saudi arabia to feed livestock
