www.youtube.com/live/jyjTT_5... To nobody's surprise, I support the Greens. But I understand and share the enthusiasm about Andy Burnham's conference speech. A breath of fresh air is the usual metaphor. To me, it felt like a window being opened to permit a view of a new landscape, at last! [1/10]

I get that we often think of survey data mainly as data and having more data at lower cost seems great, but at a very fundamental level we run surveys because we want to know what people think. If we don't care enough about people's views to ask actual people, why bother at all?

Universities cannot expect researchers to take risks if they are repeatedly at risk of redundancy while losing professional services support, grappling with the gratuitous vagaries of home and international student number swings and both teaching and assessing in an age of unregulated AI.

Yes. And I also wouldn't want EU membership to become a toy of British politics again, with one party vowing to go back in and the next campaigning to leave again. Commit to being in or staying out. Accept that the EU is changing all the time, but multilaterally and not at the command of the UK.

THIS. Christian Democracy’s mission statement is, basically, protect society and stability to make sure fascism doesn’t happen again. The first and permanent opponent of the centre right is not the centre left but the far right. And any EPP party that forgets that needs to remember it rapid.

If you've used my drawn statement on Ai for a class or other Ed context – I'd appreciate learning a bit about that (here or directly), I'd like to document a bit of where it's ended up. And if it's new to you, feel free to make use of it, all online here! Tnx! spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-sy...
my statement on Ai from the mini-comic I'm making as syllabus for a new class I'm teaching this fall. It's simple, but I pretty much said all I have to say on it - it robs you of decisions and struggle - and the joy of being surprised. It robs you of learning...

a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads: "Nothing can do this for you - for that robs you of experience and conflates answers with learning. Rather, it's all the decisions you make along the way, the mistakes, struggles, and surprises! These pathways you create - this is learning.

This is one of the objections I have when people talk about how useful LLMs can be for literature searches or for any kind of search, really. Even beyond the biases that inevitably (and, in some cases, intentionally) show up, part of a good literature search is seeing information *in context.*
