At the end of 2024, I stumbled into @shadowtodd.bsky.social’s year-end (worst?) pop singles review. It was smart and insightful and funny. And I didn’t know 80% of the songs / artists. I’m a music fan, and have loved rock and pop and hip-hop my whole life, but that was a wake-up call.

How it started/how it’s going

One of those kitchen sponges that look like a smiling face. This one looks like a frog face for reasons I can’t imagine other than “avoiding legal infringement.”

The sponge with all its color and texture scrubbed into oblivion—its lack of structural integrity makes the (now) gray face appear sinister or malicious instead of happy. Unseemly hairs of an indeterminate but hideous pedigree snake into and through the sponge’s once joyful features. All is lost.
