#3rdBOMD walked after me returning from putting out the recycling ♻️. A young, timid wood pigeon that took up a camouflaged position on grey standing against pinkish bricks of the house. ❤️ No apparent welfare issue. FBsOMD were 2 rattle & chatter magpies on side of a house roof.

In Devonshire goldenrod is called ‘farewell-to-summer’ because it blooms from August through September. It is said to grow where secret hoards of gold are hidden, and if it unexpectedly appears near a dwelling, then the inhabitants will surely have good fortune. #FlowersOnFriday

The bird has a grey crown with chestnut brown at the sides and nape and grey cheeks. Its bill is black with black feathers around it. It back and wings are brown with black/brown streaks. Its underbelly is a light grey.
Dandelion seeds can be seen in its bill. It is standing in short grass, which takes up the rest of the frame, dotted with the odd daisy or dandelion flower here and there.

#FirstBirdOfMyDay could, in context, only have been an intrepid herring gull! An exceedingly brief glimpse of a white feathery object, the size of gull, which disappeared as soon as I became aware of it, possibly from physical contact with the apex of a single storey rear extension.

I sat on the office fire escape for ten minutes after lunch today watching a sparrow build a nest out of discarded circuit wire and crumpled receipt scraps. Every overcomplicated product roadmap I drafted last week felt immediately absurd.

A Greek myth tells that Paeon, physician to the gods, healed Pluto when he was injured during the Trojan War. Aesculapius, god of healing, became jealous, and vowed to kill Paeon, but Pluto saved him by transforming him into the flower that had healed him, naming it ‘Paeonia’.

Although briefly the male house sparrow was on his own, perched on a firm woody hawthorn sprig, FBsOMD were truly a loyal breeding pair. The female emerged from the hedge interior, was looking all the time at the male, and they then flew a very short distance & went back into cover.

I just stood next to Britain’s joint-smallest bird, a goldcrest. Tiny and perfect, it piped its tune at me from the hedge. Up to a quarter of these tiny birds won’t make it through a harsh winter so I’m rooting for this one on what will be such a bitterly cold night.

I was surprised and delighted to spot a Female Common merganser (Goosander - Mergus merganser) in an unexpected place this morning. At c. 10:50hrs on the R. Sow in Victoria Park in Stafford just downstream of the slight weir. Soon flew off! Water too shallow for diving!

When I went out, 16 jackdaws were being vocal on that and the adjacent roof. I could have believed they were strategising for the whole month as well agreeing today's plan! 🖤🩶

🥁🥁🥁 An extra thrill seeing FBOMD because Moorhen is a new 1st bird for me! 😁 I didn't anticipate a 1st time 1st bird ... but at 7.35am peering down on the River Sow, in the middle of a misty Stafford, there was a Moorhen exploring the leafy bank for edibles. 🖤❤️💛🤍💚
