Morning, city utility lovers! Here’s a nicely-laid sample from the fabulous Mallorcan capital of Palma for #ManholeCoverMonday 😺

The cover bears the words “EMAYA” and “CLAVEGUERAM” (sewer), with a grid pattern across its centre.A narrow, stone-paved street in Palma, Mallorca, Carrer de les Soltes, lined with whitewashed houses, balconies and potted plants. At this point it’s rude to say no 😹 Appreciate the edible straw - very eco!

Stopped off at a beautiful cove, Cala Pi, with an imposing tower on the cliff at one end, and my suspicions about the Kingfishers were confirmed as I managed to swim right up to one that was sitting on a rock and fishing for tiddlers that were being swept into small rock pools under the cliffs 😻

#FirstBirdOfMyDay here in a small cove was two small torpedoes skimming over the water and along the shoreline, the identification of which I didn’t want to believe until I saw the unmistakable flash of turquoise - a pair of Kingfishers! 😻

It’s amazing how nature can recover from what seems to be a catastrophe - a long time ago, this sycamore was blown over in a storm but survived, and now has two long trunks rising from the original horizontal one. Amazing! 😸 #ThickTrunkTuesday
A fallen tree lies horizontally across the ground in the Japanese Garden at Mierzęcin Palace, its old trunk covered in moss. Several upright trunks have grown from the original fallen tree, giving a great example of natural regeneration. Mature woodland surrounds it, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy and blue sky visible above. There are fallen branches and cut wood in the background, reflecting the garden’s recent storm damage.

The vaulted interior of the historic stables at Mierzęcin Palace, with dark wooden horse stalls lining the left side and a pale Silesian horse being led through the sunlit entrance by its handler. The estate’s stables are still used for horses and carriage rides, so their traditional equestrian role has not died out.

Have had a lovely weekend with friends in Lubuskie province, Poland - one of my favourites because of all the forests. Stayed at the glorious Mierzęcin Palace which has been lovingly restored & is now a lovely hotel and spa complex with its own vineyard. More info in ALT text 😺
Mierzęcin Palace in the bright afternoon sunlight, viewed from the formal (English) garden. The pale cream Neo-Gothic building has an imposing octagonal tower, crenellated parapets, tall chimneys and an arched entrance loggia, with low box hedges in the foreground. The castle is a popular wedding venue, and it was being prepared for such an event here.

Mierzęcin palace was built in 1861–1863 as the seat of the von Waldow family, who had owned and developed the estate since the early 18th century. It was designed in the English Neo-Gothic style, probably by the Berlin architect Georg Heinrich Hitzig. The tower and decorative eagles are characteristic features. The palace survived the Second World War with little damage but was then used as a children’s home and, from 1959, by the local PGR (State Farm). After standing abandoned for several years, it was comprehensively restored in 1999–2001 and now functions as a hotel, spa and conference centre. A path of irregular stepping stones leads through the wooded Japanese Garden at Mierzęcin Palace to a red-painted pavilion in the style of a Japanese torii gate with a blue-green tiled roof. Curved wooden benches surround a large mature tree, with dense planting and dappled sunlight throughout the garden.

The Japanese Garden wasn’t part of the original 19th-century von Waldow landscape. It is located in the lower part of the estate, where the park descends towards the pond and Mierzęcka stream. It has a pavilion, bridge, torii gate and Japanese lantern on an island.

Unfortunately the garden was badly affected by a storm this summer. There was extensive damage throughout the Japanese garden and other parts of the park, including numerous fallen and broken mature trees. The trees have been weakened by the ongoing drought, making them susceptible to high storm winds. Here we have a formal kitchen garden beside a steeply pitched white house, with rectangular beds of vegetables and flowers arranged between low borders. An ornamental tree stands in the centre, while the tower of Mierzęcin’s historic church rises among the trees in the background.

Mierzęcin isn’t just a palace in a village - it was a Gutshof, a large agricultural estate. The von Waldow property expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the estate’s agricultural and farm complex was enlarged around the beginning of the 20th century.

The church in the background dates from the period when the von Sydow family owned Mierzęcin: they acquired the estate in 1715 and were responsible for building the church.

This weekend we had our regional Harvest Festival at Przelewice Gardens. There were market stalls, performances and displays of vintage vehicles. Fun for everyone! More info in ALT 😺
Two large round bales of straw decorated as cheerful yellow-and-black bees outside a pale yellow building at Przelewice Gardens. Each has a hay-bale body, cartoon eyes and a smiling mouth, with black antennae and translucent wings.

Straw and hay are often used for dożynki (harvest festival) decorations. Here the traditional material has been turned into big bees - an apt rural motif given the importance of pollinators to agriculture and gardens.Three colourful handmade aprons displayed outside a blue festival tent at Przelewice Gardens. One has a turquoise rooster and the words “KUR DOMOWY”, another is covered in brightly coloured folk-style flowers with “KRÓLOWA JEST JEDNA”, and the third reads “SZWAGIER KRÓL IMPREZY”. More patterned children’s and adult aprons hang behind them.

Humorous, handmade crafts and textiles are very common at KGW (Women’s Institute) stalls and rural craft fairs. The designs here combine traditional folk-inspired patterns with cheeky slogans - Królową jest jedna (“There is only one queen”) and Szwagier król imprezy (“Brother-in-law, king of the party”).A paper tray containing two pierogi ruskie topped with fried onions on a long white table at the harvest festival in Przelewice Gardens, beside a cup of red beetroot barszcz. A vase of heather and branches of berries and hydrangeas decorate the table, with festival stalls and visitors in the background.

The food was prepared by a local Koło Gospodyń Wiejskich (KGW), the Polish equivalent of the Women’s Institute, which has an important role in preserving and promoting local culinary and cultural traditions. Pierogi ruskie are traditionally filled with potato and twaróg (farmer’s cheese), while beetroot barszcz is one of Poland’s best-known soups. This one was from a packet, though 😹A row of restored vintage Ursus tractors beneath trees at the Dożynki Wojewódzkie harvest festival in Przelewice Gardens. In the foreground is a yellow Ursus C-330, decorated with sheaves of grain; behind it are green, blue and red tractors. A red-and-white banner featuring a castle hangs above the display.

The tractor display highlights the agricultural heritage celebrated at the harvest festival. Ursus tractors were a mainstay of Polish farming during the communist period and after, and surviving examples are now popular at agricultural shows and harvest festivals. The grain decorations show the connection between the machinery and the harvest being celebrated. The castle emblem on the banner represents Przelewice, whose gardens and palace host the event.
