I ordered a couple of recommendations of Holst’s The Planets from @deeplyclassical.bsky.social’s recent list and have been listening to them this morning. Both excellent, of course, and much to be recommended.

#TheCompleteBritten #184 A Shepherd’s Carol, for chorus (1944) One of two pieces setting sections of W. H. Auden's long poem "For the Time Being: A Christmas Oratorio". This carol has more than a hint of the spirituals that Britten encountered during his time in America.

Agree - I think Britten is too recent to be really recognised in context as a genius. The scope and volume of his work and the way he uses individual orchestra sections and voices is really special.

Brahms taking a reassuring 20-odd years to complete his First Symphony. There's still time to finish that thing you haven't finished yet
A Musical Marathon
In 1862 Joachim received a letter from Clara Schumann: ‘Johannes sent me the other day – imagine the surprise! – the first movement of a symphony’. She described the opening as ‘rather strong, but I have soon become used to it. The movement is full of wonderful beauties, and the themes are treated with a mastery which is becoming more and more characteristic of him.’ Joachim replied: ‘Perhaps I shall be able to invite you to Hanover for Brahms’s symphony at the end of October.’
The word ‘perhaps’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, and Clara’s surprise also reflects these friends’ awareness that the gestation of Brahms’ First Symphony was proving exceptionally lengthy. But in a culture that promotes prodigies and an ethos of goal-driven impatience, it is reassuring to reflect that Brahms took around twenty-one years to complete his First Symphony; the work’s conception may date as far back as 1854. Even when in 1862 Brahms sent Clara an early version of the first movement, progress stalled again. By the time the symphony was finished in 1876, he was in his early forties.
