Mr. Symphonist @deeplyclassical.bsky.social · 29/09/2026It's like the historically-informed/period instrument movement never happened. Lyrical, very beautiful, broad. I sometimes wanted more grit, more turbulence, more pace, but I really enjoyed these lush, autumnal accounts. 010

Mr. Symphonist @deeplyclassical.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I've no idea why he withdrew it, I'm afraid. Maybe due to his relationship with Auden, but according to one booklet note I read, the Christmas Oratorio was an active project between the two of them until at least 1945. 000

Mr. Symphonist @deeplyclassical.bsky.social · 27/09/2026#TheCompleteBritten #185 Chorale after an old French carol, for chorus (1944) Auden wanted Britten to set the whole poem, but that project stalled as the two men grew further apart. Britten recycled these two remnants for "Poet’s Christmas", a BBC programme produced by Edward Sackville-West.youtu.beBritten: Chorale After an Old French CarolYouTube video by Polyphony - Topic 110
Mr. Symphonist @deeplyclassical.bsky.social · 27/09/2026#TheCompleteBritten #184 A Shepherd’s Carol, for chorus (1944) One of two pieces setting sections of W. H. Auden's long poem "For the Time Being: A Christmas Oratorio". This carol has more than a hint of the spirituals that Britten encountered during his time in America.youtu.beBritten: A Shepherd's Carol - Terry Edwards, London Sinfonietta ChorusYouTube video by CLASSIC&OPERA 260
