Some 💩 went down at SSA today, and it’s not great so let’s talk about it 🫠 TLDR version: effective 7/3, 40-50% of the CSR (customer service rep) staff will be reassigned to answering the national 1800#. This decision was made without input from any regional, area, or teleservice center leadership.

ok so for my sins i found the book and read the chapter, and it features a specious anecdote about louis pasteur confessing on his deathbed that germ theory was wrong all along. it's sourced from a book called "virus mania."
On his deathbed, the victorious Pasteur is said to have recanted,
"Béchamp was right," declaring,
"the microbe is nothing. The terrain is everything."44 Miasma theory survives in marginalized, yet vibrant, pockets among integrative and functional medicine practition-ers. And burgeoning science documenting the critical role of the microbiome in human health and immunity tends to vindicate Bé-champ, and particularly his teachings that microorganisms are beneficial to good health. The Harisiades case the Trump DOJ cites first here represented one of the low points of early McCarthyism. Permanent residents who’d been in the US since childhood or their early teens were deported for communist party membership.
Beyond the statute, the President's inherent Article Il authority is plainly
violated by the district court's order. As a function of his inherent Article II authority
to protect the nation, the President may determine that TdA represents a significant
risk to the United States, that it is intertwined and advancing the interests of a foreign
government in a manner antithetical to the interests of the United States, and that its
members should be summarily removed from this country as part of that threat. The
exercise of authority in this case is firmly supported by longstanding precedent of
the Supreme Court. As that Court has repeatedly held, Article II confers upon the
President expansive authority over foreign affairs, national security, and
immigration. See Harisiades v. Shaughnessy, 342 U.S. 580, 588 (1952); United

If anything, this authority is heightened in the context presented by this case.
The Supreme Court has consistently noted that "[i]t is an accepted maxim of

DOGE/SSA marked this person dead and *removed his savings from his bank account,* cancelled his social security and Medicare. #seattle www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/p…
The Seattle Times
"There's nothing you need to do - we've deducted the funds from LEONARD A.
JOHNSON's account."
Uh oh. It itemized how $5,201 had been stricken from their bank account, on the grounds that Ned wasn't justified to get those benefits - because he was dead.
That was for payments he'd received in December and January.
Ned found that his February Social Security check hadn't been paid, and he's yet to receive his March check, either. His Medicare insurance had been canceled.
He also learned that when you die, your credit score gets marked as "deceased, do not issue credit," which makes it tough to get a loan.

Readers have asked Mike Masnick @mmasnick.bsky.social why his technology news site, Tech Dirt, has been covering politics so intensely lately. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w... Mike's reply is well worth a read. (alt text added)
But right now, the story that matters most is how the dismantling of American institutions threatens everything else we cover. When the fundamental structures that enable innovation, protect civil liberties, and foster open dialogue are under attack, every other tech policy story becomes secondary.

What we're witnessing isn't just another political cycle or policy debate - it's an organized effort to destroy the very systems that have made American innovation possible. Whether this is by design, or by incompetence, doesn't much matter (though it's likely a combination of both). Unlike typical policy fights where we can disagree on the details while working within the system, this attack aims to demolish the system itself.

Remember all those tech CEOs who thought they could control Trump? All those VCs who figured they could profit from chaos? All those business leaders who decided that "woke institutions" were a bigger threat than authoritarian power grabs? They're learning a very expensive lesson about the difference between creative destruction and just plain destruction.

We're going to keep covering this story because, frankly, it's the only story that matters right now, and one that not everyone manages to see clearly. The political press may not understand what's happening (or may be too afraid to say it out loud), but those of us who've spent decades studying how technology and power interact? We see it and we can't look away.
