This is honestly a perfect example of why cars fail as a form of mass transit, and any transportation network centered around the car is destined for massive amounts of traffic. www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/p...

Prince George's school bus issues force families to wait in drop-off gridlock
At least 88% of students had routes as of Tuesday, leaving 12% — or 9,000 students — without.

A pet theory of mine is that one reason the Netherlands are so good at so many sports relative to their population because the kids are able to independently go to practices growing up and don’t rely on parents driving them places, and the population density allows for more niche activities

Forgiving infrastructure assumes people make mistakes. A person on a bike who loses their balance and falls shouldn't pay for it with their life just because there was no buffer between them and a vehicle 100 times their weight.

The first time I went to Amsterdam, as soon as I left the central train station I felt deeply uncomfortable for a couple minutes because it was as quiet as a library in the middle of the day. I was too used to Penn Station and Frankfurt Hbf

One of my favorite parts of living in Germany was this combined with kiosks/spätis selling beer and being allowed to drink in public, so every single corner had tables, chairs, and a screen showing games, and the beers were like €1,50 each. The Euros especially was crazy for this

If you liberalize zoning, a lot of housing gets built. If a lot of housing gets built, housing costs taper off.

One of the biggest barriers to implementing pro-housing policy is the folk wisdom that building new market rate/mixed-income housing increases rents even though study after study shows that the opposite is the case: building more housing lowers rents

My housing politics is firmly rooted in our moral duty to welcome immigrants and refugees into our communities. Fulfilling that obligation requires actually building homes so these people can find places to live.

Walk anywhere in Amsterdam and you’ll sense a calm coherence: bricks, curbs, fixtures, benches, bollards and drains that look related. This isn’t accidental. It’s a product of the Puccini Method, the city’s standards—part design language, part technical playbook—for shaping every street and square.🧵
People of all ages and abilities walk, cycle, sit, and socialise along the residential streets of Amsterdam, which are lined with buildings, trees, flowers and plantings, benches, and terraces.People of all ages and abilities walk, cycle, sit, and socialise along the residential streets of Amsterdam, which are lined with buildings, trees, flowers and plantings, benches, and terraces.People of all ages and abilities walk, cycle, sit, and socialise along the residential streets of Amsterdam, which are lined with buildings, trees, flowers and plantings, benches, and terraces.People of all ages and abilities walk, cycle, sit, and socialise along the residential streets of Amsterdam, which are lined with buildings, trees, flowers and plantings, benches, and terraces.

One of my favorite things about Germany is that only major arterials were two-way and multi-lane. All local roads were really narrow one lane, one-way streets. It made everything much calmer and MUCH more walkable.
